Step-by-Step Oil Change
1. Warm the Engine
Run the Canyon 5 minutes to warm the oil. Park on a level surface.
2. Raise the Vehicle
Use ramps or a floor jack with stands under the designated frame points.
3. Remove the Oil Filter
Locate the oil filter on the engine block. Use a filter wrench to loosen counterclockwise. Unscrew fully, drain, set aside.
4. Drain the Oil
Locate the 15mm drain plug on the bottom of the oil pan. Remove counterclockwise. Let it drain about 7 minutes. Remove and discard the old aluminum crush washer (12337908).
5. Reinstall the Drain Plug
Install a new 12337908 crush washer. Thread the plug in by hand until seated. Torque to 18 lb-ft (24 Nm).
6. Install the New Filter
Apply a light coat of fresh 0W-20 to the rubber gasket of the new PF64 filter. Thread in by hand until the gasket contacts the block. Tighten an additional 3/4 turn.
7. Lower the Vehicle
Lower the Canyon safely.
8. Add Oil
Remove the oil filler cap. Add 4.5 quarts of dexos1 Gen 3 0W-20. Start the engine — oil pressure light clears in 2–3 seconds. Idle 2 minutes, shut off, wait 5 minutes. Check the dipstick and add remaining ~0.5 qt as needed. Final capacity with filter is approximately 5.0 quarts.
9. Check for Leaks
Inspect the drain plug and filter with the engine idling.
10. Reset the Oil Life Monitor
On the 2023 GMC Canyon: press the vehicle menu button on the instrument cluster and navigate to OIL LIFE. Press and hold SET/CLR until it resets to 100%.
