2023 Mazda CX-5 2.5T Oil Change — SKYACTIV-G 2.5T, 0W-20, Step-by-Step DIY Guide
Mazda's 2.5T turbocharged SKYACTIV-G engine is one of the most driver-rewarding four-cylinders in a crossover today — and one of the more oil-specific engines I've worked on. Mazda requires 0W-20 full synthetic, and they're not kidding: the turbocharger and the direct injection system both depend on clean, low-viscosity oil at the right intervals. Skip the dealer's $120 charge and do this yourself in about 30 minutes.
One key thing: the 2023 CX-5 2.5T has an oil change interval that varies with driving style. If you use the Mazda Connect maintenance monitor, it'll prompt you when the oil degrades. I personally change mine at 7,500 miles regardless — turbocharged engines work harder, and fresh oil is cheap insurance.

Oil requirement: The SKYACTIV-G 2.5T is engineered for 0W-20. Mazda's turbocharged engine uses a twin-scroll turbocharger fed directly by the oiling system. Low-viscosity 0W-20 flows to the turbo bearings faster on cold starts — exactly when turbo wear happens most. Do not substitute 5W-30 here.

Step-by-Step Oil Change
1. Warm the Engine (4 minutes)
Run the CX-5 for 3–4 minutes, then shut off and wait 5 minutes. The turbocharged SKYACTIV-G especially benefits from a warm drain — the oil thins completely and carries particulates with it. Never crack the drain plug on a cold turbo engine.
2. Prepare the Underside
The 2023 CX-5 has a plastic engine cover underneath. It's held by 10mm bolts and push-pin clips — usually four bolts and two or four clips depending on trim. Remove it and set it aside. With the cover off, you'll see the oil pan directly.
Lift the CX-5 on ramps or jack stands. The front subframe is the correct lift point for jack stands.
3. Drain the Oil
Position your drain pan under the 17mm drain plug at the rear of the oil pan. Remove the plug counterclockwise — pull cleanly at the last thread to avoid the oil stream. The SKYACTIV-G drains relatively fast; 8 minutes is usually sufficient.
Open the oil filler cap on top of the engine to break the vacuum.
4. Remove the Oil Filter
Spin-on filter version: The Mazda PE01-14-302A9A screws onto a spin-on mount on the passenger side of the engine block. Remove with a filter wrench counterclockwise.
Cartridge housing version (some trims): The 2023 CX-5 2.5T on some builds uses a top-mounted cartridge filter housing accessible from above the engine, driver's side rear. Remove the 64mm plastic cap with a cap wrench. The cartridge inside pulls straight up — the cap and cartridge are replaced as one assembly. Discard the old O-ring and install the new one from the filter kit.
Either way: check that the old gasket/O-ring did not stick to the mounting surface.
5. Install the New Filter
Spin-on: Apply thin coat of fresh oil to the O-ring. Hand-tight plus ¾ turn. No wrench for tightening.
Cartridge housing: Drop in the new cartridge, install new O-ring on the cap, torque the plastic cap to 18 lb-ft (do not over-tighten — it's plastic).
6. Reinstall the Drain Plug
Install a new crush washer (Mazda 9YA0-21-100). Thread the 17mm drain plug in by hand. Torque to 30 lb-ft. The CX-5's aluminum oil pan is sensitive to over-torque.
7. Fill with 0W-20
Add 5.0 quarts to start. Replace the filler cap, start the engine, idle for 60 seconds. Shut off, wait 2 minutes, check the dipstick. Add remaining oil until the dipstick reads at the FULL mark. Total with filter change: 5.7 quarts.
Post-turbo note: Let the engine idle for 2–3 minutes after filling before driving. This gives oil time to circulate through the turbocharger bearing before it comes under load.
8. Check for Leaks
At idle, inspect the drain plug and filter from below. Check the cartridge housing cap from above if applicable. No drips = you're done.
9. Reset the Oil Life Monitor
On the 2023 Mazda CX-5:
- Navigate to Vehicle Status Monitor using the Commander knob
- Select Engine Oil Life
- Press and hold the Commander to reset

You save $65–$100 per oil change. For a turbocharged crossover that needs clean oil to protect the turbo, doing it yourself also means you know exactly what went in and when.
Common Mistakes
1. Wrong viscosity. SKYACTIV-G 2.5T requires 0W-20. It's not a suggestion — the direct injection and turbo system are calibrated for it. Check the oil filler cap.
2. Skipping the turbo cool-down idle. After filling, idle the engine for 2–3 minutes before driving hard. Cold-start turbo protection depends on oil reaching the bearing quickly.
3. Overtightening the plastic cartridge cap. If your CX-5 uses the cartridge housing, the cap is plastic — 18 lb-ft maximum. More than that and you'll crack it.
4. Underfilling. 5.7 quarts with filter is the spec. Add incrementally and use the dipstick.
5. Forgetting to remove the protective plastic undertray. The undertray is worth keeping in place for road noise and underbody protection — just reinstall it after the job.
