Oil brand: Toyota's recommended brand is Mobil 1 0W-20 or any full synthetic meeting ILSAC GF-6A. Toyota Genuine Motor Oil 0W-20 (part 00279-0WQTE) works too. Just match the viscosity and spec — don't use conventional on a 10,000-mile interval truck.

Step-by-Step Oil Change

1. Warm the Oil

Start the engine and run it for 3–4 minutes, then shut off and wait 5 minutes. Warm oil drains completely; cold oil is thick and leaves more residue behind. Don't work on a hot engine — 5 minutes of cool-down is enough for a warm drain without burn risk.

2. Get Under the Truck

The 2023 Tacoma has enough factory ground clearance to use ramps on most trim levels. If you're on jack stands, use the designated frame pinch points shown in the owner's manual — never lift from the body.

Remove the plastic engine undershield if equipped. Two or four 10mm bolts hold it in place.

3. Drain the Oil

Position your drain pan under the oil pan drain plug — it's at the rear of the oil pan on the 2TR-FE, slightly driver's side. Remove the 14mm drain plug counterclockwise. Pull the plug away quickly when it's almost out to avoid soaking your hand.

Let it drain for 8–10 minutes. Pull the oil filler cap on top of the engine to speed up drainage.

4. Remove the Oil Filter

The Toyota 04152-YZZA1 is a cartridge-style spin-on filter located on the passenger side of the engine block. Remove counterclockwise. Have a rag under it — some oil will spill.

Clean the mounting surface with a rag. Check that the old rubber gasket came off with the filter — not stuck to the engine block. This is one of the most common mistakes on Toyota oil changes.

5. Install the New Filter

Apply a thin coat of fresh 0W-20 to the new filter's rubber O-ring. Screw on hand-tight, then add ¾ of a turn. Do not use a filter wrench to tighten. Overtightening collapses the O-ring and causes leaks; undertightening lets it back off on startup.

6. Reinstall the Drain Plug

Thread in the drain plug by hand (to avoid cross-threading the aluminum oil pan), then torque to 27 lb-ft. If you're reusing the crush washer, it's worth replacing it — Toyota 90430-12031 is about $1 and prevents seepage.

7. Fill with 0W-20

Add 5.0 quarts first. Replace the filler cap, start the engine, and let it idle for 60 seconds. Shut off, wait 2 minutes, then check the dipstick. The 2TR-FE takes exactly 5.5 quarts to the FULL mark — add the remaining 0.5 quart incrementally.

8. Check for Leaks

With the engine at idle, visually check the drain plug and oil filter area from below. No drips = you're done. Shut off and wait 5 minutes for a final dipstick check.

9. Reset the Maintenance Light

On the 2023 Tacoma:

1. Turn ignition to ON (engine off) — press the power button once without pressing the brake
2. Press and hold the TRIP button on the instrument cluster until the odometer resets to Trip A
3. Turn ignition OFF
4. Hold the TRIP button while turning ignition back to ON
5. Hold until the maintenance light flashes and resets (about 5 seconds)

Or navigate through the infotainment: Settings > Vehicle > Maintenance > Reset.

Common Mistakes

1. Not checking if the old O-ring came off with the filter. This is a Toyota-specific headache. The rubber O-ring on the 04152-YZZA1 filter occasionally sticks to the block. If you install the new filter on top of the old O-ring, you'll have an oil leak immediately. Always check.

2. Underfilling. 5.5 quarts is the spec with a filter change. Many people add 5.0 and call it done. Check the dipstick after running the engine.

3. Over-torquing the drain plug. 27 lb-ft. The aluminum oil pan doesn't recover well from over-tightened drain plugs. Use a torque wrench — guessing leads to stripped threads.

4. Using 5W-30. The 2023 Tacoma calls for 0W-20. Prior-gen 2TR-FE trucks used 5W-30, but Toyota updated the spec. Check the oil cap — it says 0W-20.

5. Skipping the filter O-ring oil. A dry O-ring can tear during installation, leading to oil loss at startup.
