How to Change Your 2023 Volkswagen Tiguan 2.0T's Oil — DIY Guide
Here's what I do every time I service the 2023 Volkswagen Tiguan 2.0T TSI — and it's almost identical to the Audi Q5 oil change if you've done that one. The Tiguan uses the EA888 Gen 3B engine, shared across the entire VW-Audi Group compact lineup. VW dealers charge $180–$250; DIY cost runs around $50–$70. The key details: the filter is a cartridge from the top of the engine, and the oil spec is VW 508.00 0W-20 (not generic 0W-20).

Oil note: VW 508.00 is required — not advisory. Using a generic API SP 0W-20 does not meet 508.00 chemistry. Correct options: Castrol Edge Professional LongLife IV 0W-20, Pennzoil Platinum Euro 0W-20, Liqui-Moly 0W-20 508.00, and Motul 8100 Eco-Lite 0W-20.
Filter note: The 06L-115-562 fits the Tiguan, Q5, A4 2.0T, GTI, Jetta GLI, and other EA888 Gen 3 models.

Step-by-Step Oil Change
1. Warm the Engine
Run the Tiguan for 5–7 minutes. The 4.9-qt capacity drains fully in 8 minutes when warm.
2. Access the Undertray
A front removable panel is held by T25 Torx bolts and plastic clips. Remove this panel to expose the drain plug. The filter housing is accessed from above — you don't need to remove the undertray for that step.
3. Remove the Filter Housing Cap (From Above)
The 06L-115-562 cartridge filter housing is on the top of the engine — typically on the driver's side near the rear of the valve cover. Use a 27mm cup socket to remove the cap counterclockwise. Pull the cap with the old filter element. Tip the element assembly into your drain pan.
4. Install the New Filter Element
Install the new filter element on the cap's center post. Replace both O-rings from the filter kit. Reinstall the housing cap and torque to 18 lb-ft (25 Nm).
5. Drain the Oil
Slide your drain pan under the 19mm drain plug. Remove counterclockwise. The EA888 Gen 3B's 4.9-quart drain takes about 8 minutes. Remove the old N-013-252-6 crush washer.
6. Reinstall the Drain Plug
Install a new aluminum crush washer. Thread the drain plug in by hand. Torque to 22 lb-ft (30 Nm).
7. Reinstall the Undertray Panel
Reinstall the undertray front panel and all T25 bolts.
8. Add Oil
Remove the oil filler cap on the valve cover. Add 4.5 quarts of 508.00-spec 0W-20. Start the engine — oil pressure clears within 5 seconds. Idle 90 seconds, shut off, wait 5 minutes. Check the digital oil level via the Tiguan instrument cluster → Car Functions → Service → Oil Level. Top up to max. Final capacity with filter is 4.9 quarts.
9. Check for Leaks
Idle 2–3 minutes. Check the filter housing cap and drain plug area.
10. Reset the Service Interval Display
Navigate to the Service menu via the instrument cluster → Inspection → Reset (hold confirm for 3 seconds).
2023 VW Tiguan EA888 Gen 3B Notes
- Carbon buildup: The Tiguan's EA888 accumulates carbon on intake valve stems. At 40,000–60,000 miles, a quality GDI intake cleaner treatment or walnut blasting is worth doing.
- Extended intervals caution: I recommend capping at 8,000 miles regardless of what the service display shows.
- Timing chain: The EA888 Gen 3B uses a hydraulic tensioner timing chain. Brief cold-start rattles under 5 seconds are normal at high mileage. Persistent rattles warrant inspection.
