Step-by-Step Oil Change
1. Warm the Engine
Run the XC60 B5 for 5–7 minutes. The B5254T4's 6.3-qt capacity drains cleanly in about 9 minutes when warm.
2. Access the Filter Housing Cap (From Above)
Open the hood and remove the engine cover (typically lifts off locating posts). Locate the filter housing cap on the top of the engine. Position a drain tray or rags under the housing.
3. Remove the Filter Housing Cap
Using a 27mm socket (verify fitment), turn counterclockwise to loosen. Lift the cap with the cartridge attached and hold over a tray to drain 30 seconds. Remove the old 31372281 cartridge. Inspect the housing cap O-rings. Install the new cartridge onto the cap.
4. Raise the Vehicle
Use ramps or a floor jack with stands. The XC60 has plastic undertray panels — remove the relevant access panel for drain plug access.
5. Remove the Undertray Access Panel
Remove the retaining clips or bolts to access the drain plug. Set the panel aside.
6. Drain the Oil
Locate the 17mm drain plug. Remove the 31316047 drain plug counterclockwise. Drain completely in about 9 minutes. Discard the old drain plug — do not reuse.
7. Install the New Drain Plug
Thread the new Volvo 31316047 self-sealing drain plug in by hand. Torque to 25 lb-ft (34 Nm). Aluminum oil pan — do not exceed this spec.
8. Reinstall the Filter Housing Cap
Lightly coat the new O-rings with fresh 0W-20. Torque the housing cap to 20 lb-ft (27 Nm) — verify your specific torque spec in your Volvo owner's manual.
9. Reinstall the Undertray
Reinstall the access panel or undertray sections.
10. Add Oil
Add 6.0 quarts of Volvo-spec 0W-20 low-SAPS synthetic. Start the engine — oil pressure light clears in 2–3 seconds. Idle 2 minutes, shut off, wait 5 minutes. Check the dipstick or electronic oil level indicator. Add remaining ~0.3 qt to reach the max mark. Total capacity with filter is 6.3 quarts.
11. Check for Leaks
With the engine idling, check the filter housing from above and the drain plug from below.
12. Reset the Service Reminder
On the 2023 Volvo XC60: Navigate to Settings → My Car → Service in the Sensus infotainment display and follow the reset prompts.
