Oil note: Toyota moved the 2019+ RAV4 2.5L to 0W-16. I still see people reach for 0W-20 because older Toyotas used it, but the RAV4's Dynamic Force engine is calibrated for the thinner oil. If the bottle doesn't say 0W-16, I put it back on the shelf.
Filter note: The RAV4 uses Toyota 04152-YZZA1, the same basic filter family you'll see on other Toyota four-cylinders. That makes parts easy to find, but don't assume every Toyota 2.5L uses the same filter by memory alone. I always verify the part number before I start.

Step-by-Step Oil Change
1. Warm the Engine
I run the RAV4 for about 4 minutes, then shut it down and let it sit another 5 minutes. That gets the oil warm enough to drain fast without turning the underbody into a burn-risk project.
2. Raise the Front and Access the Undertray
The RAV4 doesn't need much lift, but I still prefer ramps or a floor jack with stands. Never trust just the jack. Once it's secure, remove the small service panel or the relevant undertray fasteners so you can reach the drain plug and filter housing cleanly.
3. Remove the Oil Filler Cap
I pull the filler cap before going underneath. It helps the oil drain faster and reminds me the system is open so I don't absentmindedly start the engine.
4. Drain the Oil
Position the drain pan under the rear area of the oil pan. Remove the 14mm drain plug counterclockwise and let it drain fully. The RAV4 only holds 4.6 quarts, so it doesn't take forever, but I still give it a full 8 minutes.
Once the flow slows down, discard the old 90430-12031 crush washer. It's cheap insurance against driveway spots.
5. Replace the Filter
Remove the old 04152-YZZA1 filter element and install the new one. If your housing uses an O-ring from the filter kit, replace that too and lightly oil it with fresh 0W-16 before reinstalling.
This is the step I don't rush. Toyota housings usually behave fine, but pinched O-rings and overtightened caps are still how people turn a basic oil change into a leak hunt.
6. Reinstall the Drain Plug
Install a new 90430-12031 washer on the drain plug. Thread it in by hand first, then torque to 27 lb-ft (37 Nm). The pan is aluminum, and aluminum doesn't forgive lazy wrenching.
7. Refill with Oil
I add 4.2 quarts first, then start the RAV4 and let it idle for about 45 seconds. Shut it off, wait 5 minutes, then check the dipstick. Top off to the full mark. Final fill is 4.6 quarts with filter.
Starting with the full spec volume all at once works sometimes, but I prefer creeping up on the line. Overfilling is pointless and messy.
8. Check for Leaks
With the engine idling, inspect the filter housing and drain plug area. If it's dry after a minute or two, you're in good shape.
9. Reinstall the Undertray
Reattach the service panel or undertray fasteners you removed earlier. Missing clips become rattles later.
10. Reset the Maintenance Reminder
On the 2024 RAV4, use the gauge cluster or vehicle settings menu to reset the maintenance reminder. Toyota's menu flow changes a little by trim, but the reset option is straightforward once you're in the maintenance screen.
