How to Change Your 2024 Toyota Tacoma 2.7L Oil — DIY Guide
I've always thought the Tacoma 2.7L is one of the best oil-change engines for a home mechanic. It doesn't fight you. The filter is straightforward, the capacity is sensible, and the truck has enough clearance that you don't need to turn the driveway into a full shop setup.
The 2024 Tacoma 2.7L still gives you that kind of service job. Dealers will happily charge $100-$150 for it. I can do it myself for about $45-$60, and the truck gets exactly the oil and filter I want in it.

Additional tools: 14mm socket, oil filter wrench, drain pan, funnel, torque wrench, 10mm socket if the undershield is fitted.
Oil note: Toyota specs 0W-20 here. Older truck guys still reach for 5W-30 out of habit. I don't. The oil cap and the service data both say 0W-20, so that's what goes in.
Filter note: Toyota 04152-YZZA1 is easy to find and cheap enough that there is no reason to cheap out with mystery-brand filters unless you like repeating jobs.

Step-by-Step Oil Change
1. Warm the Truck
I run the Tacoma for 3 to 4 minutes, then shut it off and give it a few minutes to cool down. Warm oil drains better. Burned forearms don't improve the job.
2. Get the Truck Safely Up
On stock-height Tacomas, ramps are usually enough. If you're using a jack, support the truck properly with stands. The 2.7L doesn't require heroics, but it still deserves safe setup.
3. Remove the Undershield if Equipped
Some trims or configurations use a small plastic panel. Remove the fasteners and set it aside so you have a clean shot at the drain plug and filter.
4. Drain the Oil
Position the pan under the drain plug, remove the 14mm plug, and let the oil drain completely. I give it a full 8 to 10 minutes. Pull the oil filler cap up top while it drains to help the flow.
Remove the old 90430-12031 washer and throw it away. This is not where I try to save one dollar.
5. Remove the Old Filter
Take off the old 04152-YZZA1 filter. Clean the sealing surface and make sure the old gasket came off with it. Toyota filter-gasket doubles are a stupid problem, but they're real.
6. Install the New Filter
Lightly oil the new filter gasket with fresh 0W-20. Thread it on by hand until the gasket contacts the base, then go another 3/4 turn. No wrench on installation.
7. Reinstall the Drain Plug
Fit a new 90430-12031 washer, thread the plug in by hand, and torque it to 27 lb-ft (37 Nm).
8. Fill with New Oil
I add 5.0 quarts first, start the truck, idle for about a minute, shut it off, and wait 5 minutes. Then I check the dipstick and top off. Final capacity is 5.5 quarts with filter.
That half-quart top-off matters. A lot of Tacoma owners stop at five and wonder why the stick reads low.
9. Check for Leaks
Inspect the filter and drain plug while the engine idles. If it's dry, you're done.
10. Reinstall the Panel and Reset the Reminder
Put the undershield back on and reset the maintenance light using the instrument cluster or vehicle settings.
Tacoma Notes Worth Remembering
- 0W-20 is correct for this truck: Don't service it like an older Tacoma from memory.
- 5.5 quarts means finish with the dipstick: Don't just dump in five and call it good.
- Toyota gasket discipline matters: Drain washer and filter gasket problems are the usual self-inflicted leaks.
