The alternator is a generator driven by a belt off the engine. While the car is running, it produces electricity to power everything — lights, electronics, AC, fuel pump — and recharges the battery at the same time. A healthy alternator outputs between 13.5V and 14.5V.
When the alternator fails, the car runs off battery power alone. Depending on electrical load, most batteries can keep a car running for 20–60 minutes before it dies completely.
Common Bad Alternator Symptoms
1. Battery warning light on the dashboard This light doesn't specifically mean the battery is bad — it means the charging system isn't working. The alternator is the most common cause.
2. Dimming or flickering headlights Lights that dim at idle and brighten at higher RPM point to a weak alternator that can't keep up with demand. If your interior lights dim noticeably when you turn on accessories, suspect the alternator.
3. Car starts fine but dies later The battery gets you started, but the alternator isn't replenishing it. Car drives fine, then slowly loses power to accessories, then stalls.
4. Electrical gremlins Random issues — windows moving slowly, radio cutting out, gauges behaving erratically — often appear when voltage supply is inconsistent.
5. Burning rubber or hot electrical smell A seized alternator bearing can cause the belt to slip and smell. Electrical burning smells suggest internal winding failure.
6. Growling or whining noise A failing alternator bearing produces a growl that changes with engine RPM. Distinguish it from wheel bearing noise by revving in neutral — if the noise changes, it's likely engine-related.
How to Test the Alternator at Home
Test 1: Voltage Test (Multimeter)
Start the car and let it idle. Set your multimeter to DC voltage (20V setting) and probe the battery terminals — red to positive, black to negative.
- 13.5V–14.5V: Alternator is charging correctly
- Below 13.5V: Charging is weak or alternator is failing
- Above 14.8V: Overcharging — regulator may be faulty
Now turn on the headlights, AC, rear defroster, and radio simultaneously. Watch the voltage. It may drop slightly, but it should stay above 13.0V. If it drops to 12.5V or below with accessories on, the alternator is undersized or failing.
Test 2: The Disconnect Test (Older Vehicles Only)
Warning: Do NOT perform this test on modern vehicles (roughly 2000 and newer). Disconnecting the battery while the engine runs can destroy the alternator, ECM, and other electronics on vehicles with modern electrical systems.
On older carbureted or early-injection vehicles, some mechanics disconnect the negative battery cable while the engine runs to see if it keeps running off alternator power alone. This test is outdated and destructive on modern cars — skip it.
Test 3: Load Test at the Parts Store
Auto parts stores (AutoZone, O'Reilly, Advance) will test your alternator for free — either in the car or on the bench if you remove it. The machine performs a conductance test and load test that's more accurate than a simple voltage reading. Check the Belt First
Before condemning the alternator, inspect the serpentine belt. A loose or cracked belt slips on the alternator pulley and reduces charge output. If the belt squeals on startup or shows cracks, replace it first and retest.
