What Does a Brake Caliper Do?

The brake caliper is the hydraulic clamp that squeezes brake pads against the rotor to slow your vehicle. Most cars use a single-piston sliding caliper on the rear and either single or dual-piston fixed calipers on the front. When a caliper seizes, leaks, or fails to release fully, you'll feel it — in your stopping distance, your fuel economy, and eventually in your rotors.

Shops charge $150–$300 per caliper installed, plus pads and rotors if they're worn. Doing it yourself costs $50–$120 per caliper in parts and a Saturday morning.

Signs Your Caliper Needs Replacement

Pulling to One Side Under Braking

If the car dives left or right when you hit the brakes, one caliper is likely applying more pressure than the other — either a seized piston on one side or a stuck sliding pin.

Vehicle Pulls While Driving (Not Just Braking)

A caliper that doesn't fully release keeps constant drag on the rotor. The rotor heats up, fuel economy drops, and the pad on that corner wears 3–4× faster than the others.

Soft or Spongy Brake Pedal

A leaking caliper bleeds hydraulic pressure from the system. If you have fluid around the wheel or a wet caliper boot, the piston seal has failed.

Uneven Pad Wear

Pull the wheels and compare pad thickness side to side and inner vs. outer on the same caliper. Uneven wear — especially an outer pad worn down while the inner is near new — means a seized slider pin, not necessarily a full caliper failure (see below).

Caliper Body Damage or Corrosion

Severe rust, cracks, or stripped bleed screws are reasons to replace rather than rebuild.

  • Clear hose and collection bottle for brake bleeding
  • Turkey baster for removing old fluid from master cylinder reservoir
  • Thread chaser or wire brush for caliper bracket bolt threads

Step-by-Step: Brake Caliper Replacement

Step 1: Gather Vehicle-Specific Information

Before ordering parts:

  • Confirm whether your rear calipers have an integrated parking brake (screw-in piston) or a cable-actuated shoe inside the rotor (most common on rear disc/drum combos). Integrated parking brake pistons wind in — they don't compress straight back.
  • Find your caliper bracket bolt torque spec and caliper slide pin torque spec from a factory service manual or reliable database.

Step 2: Loosen the Wheel, Then Lift and Support

Crack all lug nuts loose before jacking. Lift the corner, support on a jack stand at a proper pinch weld or frame point, and remove the wheel.

Step 3: Open the Master Cylinder Reservoir

Remove the cap and use a turkey baster to pull out about half the fluid. Pushing the piston back in forces old fluid up — doing this prevents overflow and contamination of the reservoir.

Step 4: Remove the Old Caliper

  1. Locate the two caliper slide pin bolts (usually 12 mm or 14 mm hex or Torx). Remove them.
  2. Swing the caliper off the rotor. Hang it from a wire hook to avoid stressing the brake hose — never let it dangle by the line.
  3. Slide the old brake pads off the bracket (note their orientation and anti-squeal hardware placement).

Step 5: Disconnect the Brake Hose (Full Replacement Only)

If you're reusing the caliper hose (banjo bolt style) versus replacing the rubber flex line:

  1. Have a rag ready — brake fluid will drip.
  2. Use the flare nut wrench to crack the fitting. Remove the banjo bolt if applicable.
  3. Cap the line immediately to minimize fluid loss.

Step 6: Remove the Caliper Bracket

Two larger bolts (typically 17–19 mm) hold the bracket to the steering knuckle. These are often thread-locked from the factory — apply penetrating oil and use a breaker bar. Clean the bracket mounting surface of rust and debris before reinstalling.

Step 7: Install the New Caliper Bracket

Thread in the bracket bolts by hand first, then torque to spec — typically 80–120 lb-ft depending on vehicle. Clean, greased threads prevent galling; apply a small amount of anti-seize if the spec allows.

Step 8: Prepare the New Caliper

Front calipers (straight-push piston): Use a C-clamp to gently compress the piston fully into its bore before installation. Press against the old pad, not the piston face directly.

Rear calipers with integrated parking brake: The piston must be wound in clockwise using a caliper cube tool while pressing inward simultaneously. It will NOT compress with a C-clamp alone. Attempting to force it will damage the piston seal.

Step 9: Install New Pads and Caliper

  1. Apply a thin coat of brake caliper grease to the slide pin contact areas on the bracket — not on the friction material or rotor contact surface.
  2. Install the inner pad (piston side) and outer pad in the bracket.
  3. Slide the new caliper over the pads and rotor.
  4. Thread the slide pin bolts by hand, then torque to spec — typically 25–35 lb-ft for slide pins.

Step 10: Reconnect the Brake Hose

Reconnect the flex line or banjo bolt. Torque banjo bolts to spec (typically 20–30 lb-ft). New crush washers on banjo bolt connections are required — reusing old ones causes leaks.

Step 11: Bleed the Caliper

Air in the new caliper must be purged before driving. Use the two-person method or a one-man bleeder kit:

  1. Top off the master cylinder reservoir with fresh DOT 3 or DOT 4 (check your cap — never mix types).
  2. Starting at the new caliper: crack the bleeder screw (8 mm typically), push a clear hose over the nipple, submerge the other end in a jar of clean fluid.
  3. Have a helper pump the pedal until fluid runs clear and bubble-free, then close the bleeder with the pedal held down.
  4. Check reservoir level frequently — running it dry introduces air into the entire system.

Step 12: Bed the New Brakes

New pads and rotors require a bedding cycle before full performance:

  1. Accelerate to 30 mph and apply moderate brake pressure to slow to 5 mph (don't stop fully).
  2. Repeat 6–8 times, allowing 30 seconds between each application for heat dissipation.
  3. Then accelerate to 50 mph and repeat 4–6 times with firmer pressure.

Common Mistakes

  • Forgetting to compress the master cylinder fluid first — fluid overflows, corrodes paint
  • Cross-threading the bleeder screw — always open and close when dry before installing the caliper
  • Not torquing bracket bolts — undertorqued bracket bolts allow caliper movement under hard braking
  • Using a C-clamp on integrated parking brake pistons — damages the thread mechanism inside the piston
