Car Pulling to One Side While Driving? Here's Why

You let go of the steering wheel briefly and watch the car drift. Or you have to hold the wheel slightly off-center to drive straight. You've been ignoring it for a while but now it's getting worse. This is a very common complaint — and the cause is almost always one of a handful of things, most of which you can diagnose yourself in your driveway.

How Bad Is It?

The urgency depends on severity:

  • Slight drift when you release the wheel: Common, often just alignment or tire pressure
  • Consistent pull requiring constant steering correction: Needs attention soon — alignment, suspension, or brake issue
  • Sudden, severe pull especially when braking: May indicate a stuck brake caliper — get this checked immediately

Cause 1: Unequal Tire Pressure (Most Common, Check First)

Before anything else, check tire pressure on all four tires. A tire that's significantly lower on one side creates more rolling resistance, which pulls the car toward that side.

Check pressure cold (before driving more than a mile) using a tire gauge. The correct pressure is on the sticker inside the driver's door jamb — not the maximum pressure on the tire sidewall.

If one tire is significantly lower than the others, inflate it to spec and drive. If the pull goes away, you found it. Check for a slow leak.


Cause 2: Wheel Alignment Out of Spec

Wheel alignment refers to the angles at which your tires contact the road. Three main alignment angles — camber, caster, and toe — all affect straight-line tracking. When any of these are off (usually due to hitting a pothole, curb, or accumulating wear), the car pulls.

Signs alignment is the cause:

  • Car pulls consistently in one direction
  • Steering wheel is off-center when driving straight
  • Uneven tire wear (more wear on inside or outside edge of tires)

Cause 3: Brake Caliper Sticking

If the car pulls primarily or dramatically when you apply the brakes, a sticking brake caliper is likely. The caliper on one side is dragging — applying partial braking force even when your foot is off the pedal.

How to check: Drive the car for 10–15 minutes, then park and carefully feel near each wheel. A stuck caliper will make one wheel significantly hotter than the others. Use caution — the wheel and brake components can be extremely hot.

Other signs of a stuck caliper: one brake rotor visibly more worn than the other, burning smell from one wheel, car handling like it's fighting you on that corner.

A sticking caliper is a safety issue — it can cause a brake fire and dramatically reduces braking effectiveness. Get it addressed promptly.


Cause 4: Worn or Uneven Tires

A tire with a separated belt or uneven wear can pull significantly. Rotate tires front to back and see if the pull changes direction or severity — if it follows the tire, the tire is the problem.

Also check for bulges, flat spots, or feathering on the tread surface. Any of these indicate a compromised tire that should be replaced.


Cause 5: Worn Suspension or Steering Components

Worn tie rods, control arm bushings, ball joints, or wheel bearings can all cause pulling or wandering. These are less immediately obvious but worth inspecting if other causes check out.

Quick check: With the car safely on jack stands, grab each front tire at the 9 and 3 o'clock position and try to wiggle it side to side. Any looseness or clunking indicates worn tie rod ends or ball joints. Then grab at 12 and 6 o'clock and wiggle — looseness here indicates wheel bearing play.

Cause 6: Torque Steer (Front-Wheel-Drive Vehicles)

On some front-wheel-drive vehicles — especially those with high-output engines — hard acceleration causes a brief pull to one side. This is called torque steer and is caused by unequal-length driveshafts creating different reaction forces during hard acceleration. It's often a design characteristic rather than a fault, but worn CV joints or axle shafts can make it worse.


Diagnosis Order

  1. Check all four tire pressures first
  2. Inspect tires for obvious damage or uneven wear
  3. Rotate tires to see if the pull follows the tire
  4. Check for hot wheels after driving (caliper test)
  5. Inspect tie rod ends and ball joints on jack stands
  6. Get an alignment check if all else checks out
