Can You Check Wheel Alignment at Home? (What to Look For)

A full wheel alignment — adjusting camber, caster, and toe to manufacturer specifications — requires an alignment rack and takes a trained technician. You can't replicate that at home. What you can do is identify the signs that your alignment is off, check for the most common issues yourself, and make a smarter decision about whether you need a shop visit before spending $100–$150.

What Wheel Alignment Actually Controls

Toe: Whether the fronts of the tires point inward (toe-in) or outward (toe-out) when viewed from above. Toe misalignment causes rapid, uneven tire wear and affects straight-line tracking.

Camber: The vertical angle of the tire when viewed from the front. Positive camber tilts the top of the tire outward; negative camber tilts it inward. Excessive camber causes one-sided tire wear.

Caster: The angle of the steering axis when viewed from the side. Affects steering feel and return-to-center behavior. Caster is less frequently misaligned and can't be easily checked at home.


Warning Signs Your Alignment May Be Off

Before breaking out any tools, these symptoms point toward an alignment problem:

The car pulls to one side. On a flat, straight road with light grip on the wheel, a well-aligned car tracks straight. If it consistently drifts right or left, alignment or tire pressure is usually the cause.

The steering wheel is off-center. If the steering wheel is slightly rotated to one side when the car is going perfectly straight, alignment — especially rear toe — may be off.

Uneven tire wear. Check the tread across the full width of each tire. If one edge is wearing faster than the other, that's a classic alignment symptom.

Vibration or wandering. The car feels vague or requires constant small steering corrections to go straight.


Home Check #1: The Straight-Line Roll Test

Find a flat, empty parking lot or quiet street. Drive at about 20 mph and briefly let go of the wheel. The car should track straight for several seconds. A car that immediately pulls left or right has either misaligned alignment or unequal tire pressure.

Check tire pressure first — an underinflated tire on one side can mimic a pull. If pressures are correct and the car still pulls, alignment is the likely cause.


Home Check #2: Tire Wear Inspection

Get down and look at the tires from the front and from the side:

  • Inner or outer edge worn significantly more than the middle: Camber is off
  • Feathered wear (smooth on one side, sharp on the other): Toe is off
  • Diagonal scrubbing pattern: Combination of alignment issues or suspension wear

Even wear across the full tread width, with the center wearing slightly faster than edges, is normal for slightly over-inflated tires — not an alignment issue.


Home Check #3: Visual Camber Check

Stand in front of the car and look at each front tire. The tire should be nearly vertical — slight negative camber (top tilted slightly inward) is normal and intentional on many vehicles. If one tire visibly leans more than the other, camber is off.

This test has limits — small misalignments that still cause tire wear aren't visible to the eye. But obvious lean is easy to spot.


What Causes Alignment to Go Off?

  • Hitting a pothole hard
  • Curbing a tire
  • Minor collision (even a low-speed parking lot bump can shift toe settings)
  • Worn suspension or steering components (tie rod ends, control arm bushings)
  • Normal wear over time (especially on older vehicles)

When to Get a Professional Alignment

Book an alignment when:

  • The car pulls consistently despite correct tire pressure
  • You can see uneven tire wear across the tread width
  • You've replaced steering or suspension components (tie rods, control arms, struts)
  • You've had a significant impact (pothole, curb strike)
  • Annual checkup — once a year is a reasonable maintenance interval

An alignment costs $100–$150 at most shops and takes about 45 minutes. It's one of the jobs you can't DIY fully, but checking yourself first ensures you're going for the right reason.
