How to Check Tire Tread Depth (and When to Replace)

Worn tires are one of the leading causes of blowouts and hydroplaning — and most drivers have no idea how close their tires are to the danger zone. Checking tread depth takes two minutes and requires nothing more than a quarter. Here's how to do it and what the numbers mean.

Why Tread Depth Matters

Tire tread channels water away from the contact patch when it rains. As tread wears down, those channels become shallower — until at some point, the tire is essentially skimming on a thin film of water instead of maintaining contact with the road. That's hydroplaning.

The legal minimum tread depth in most US states is 2/32 of an inch. But stopping distances increase significantly before you reach the legal limit. At 4/32", wet stopping distances are already meaningfully longer than on a new tire. At 2/32", you're in genuinely dangerous territory on wet roads.


The Quarter Test (Quick Check)

Grab a quarter. Insert it into a tread groove with Washington's head pointing down, toward the tire.

  • If you can see the top of Washington's head: You have less than 4/32" remaining. Plan to replace soon — this is the warning zone.
  • If Washington's head is fully visible plus you can see the words "IN GOD WE TRUST": You're at or below 2/32". Replace immediately.
  • If part of Washington's head is covered: You have at least 4/32" remaining. Still monitor regularly.

The Penny Test (More Commonly Known, Less Useful)

You've probably heard of the penny test — if you can see all of Lincoln's head, the tire is worn out. That test tells you when you're at 2/32", which is the legal minimum. It doesn't warn you early enough. The quarter test is better because it catches you at 4/32", where you still have time to plan the replacement without being in emergency territory.


Using a Tread Depth Gauge (Most Accurate)

A tread depth gauge costs $5–$10 at any auto parts store. Press the pin into the groove, push the body flush against the tread surface, and read the depth. Check multiple grooves across the width of the tire — uneven wear tells you something important about alignment or inflation.

New tires typically start at 10/32" to 11/32" of tread. Premium all-season tires have tread down to about 9/32".


Reading Wear Patterns

Where the tread wears tells you the cause:

Center wear (middle worn, edges fine): Tire is chronically over-inflated. Reduce to the door jamb spec.

Edge wear (both edges worn, center fine): Tire is chronically under-inflated. Inflate to spec.

One-side wear (inner or outer edge only): Alignment problem or worn suspension components. Get an alignment check.

Cupping or scalloping (wavy pattern): Shock absorbers or struts are worn. The tire is bouncing rather than rolling smoothly.

Feathering (smooth on one side, sharp on the other): Toe alignment is off. Requires alignment adjustment.


When to Replace

Replace tires when:

  • Any tire reaches 4/32" or less (especially if you drive in rain)
  • The tread wear indicator bars (molded into the grooves at 2/32") are flush with the tread surface
  • You see sidewall bulges, cracks, or visible cord/belts
  • One tire is significantly more worn than the others (rotation was skipped)

If two tires need replacement, replace in pairs — front pair or rear pair together. Mixing new and very worn tires on the same axle creates unpredictable handling.


How Often to Check

Check tread depth every time you check tire pressure — ideally once a month and always before a long trip. It takes 2 minutes and catches dangerous wear before it becomes an emergency.
