How to Find and Fix a Slow Tire Leak Yourself

You fill the tire. A few days later it's low again. There's no blowout, no obvious damage — just a tire that keeps losing air. This is a slow leak, and in most cases, you can find it and fix it yourself in 20–30 minutes with a $15 plug kit. Here's how.

First: Confirm It's a Leak (Not Just Pressure Loss)

Tires naturally lose about 1–2 PSI per month due to air permeating through the rubber. If your tire is losing more than that — say, 5+ PSI per week — you have a leak. If you're refilling a tire every week or more, something is definitely wrong.

Check the valve stem first: press your fingertip against the valve stem opening while the tire is inflated. If you feel air escaping, the valve core is loose or failed. A valve core tool costs $3 and tightening (or replacing) the core fixes this in 2 minutes.


How to Find the Leak

Method 1: Soapy Water

Mix dish soap with water in a spray bottle. Inflate the tire to its normal pressure, then spray the entire tire surface — tread, sidewalls, and the valve stem area. Watch for bubbles forming. Slow, steady bubbles pinpoint the leak location.

This works for small punctures that are too small to hear or see. Be patient — bubbles from a very slow leak may take 30–60 seconds to form.

Method 2: Submerge in Water

If you've removed the wheel, dunk it (or sections of it) in a tub of water. Air bubbles will stream from the leak location. Easier to see small leaks this way than the spray method.

Method 3: Listen

Inflate to higher-than-normal pressure (not exceeding the max sidewall rating), then hold the tire close to your ear and rotate it slowly. A slow hiss pinpoints the general area, then use soapy water to find the exact spot.


Common Leak Locations

Tread puncture (nail, screw, staple): Most common cause of slow leaks. The object itself often seals the hole partially — the tire leaks slowly rather than going flat immediately.

Valve stem: The rubber valve stem can crack or the valve core can loosen, causing slow leaks. Very common and very easy to fix.

Bead leak (rim seal): Air escapes between the tire bead and the wheel rim. Can be caused by corrosion on the rim flange, hitting a pothole, or simply an old tire. Soapy water around the bead will show bubbles here.

Sidewall damage: If the leak is on the sidewall, the tire cannot be repaired — it must be replaced.


How to Fix a Tread Puncture

A tire plug kit costs $10–$20 and handles the vast majority of tread punctures. The process:

  1. Locate the puncture (leave the object in — it's keeping air in while you work)
  2. Using the reaming tool in the kit, insert it into the hole and work it in and out to clean and slightly enlarge the hole to accept the plug
  3. Thread a plug strip through the insertion tool's needle
  4. Push the plug tool into the hole until about 1/4 of the plug extends above the surface
  5. Pull the tool out — this seats the plug in the hole
  6. Trim the excess plug flush with the tread surface
  7. Inflate and check with soapy water

A plug is a safe, permanent repair for tread punctures up to about 1/4" diameter and located in the central 3/4 of the tread. Sidewall or shoulder punctures cannot be plugged — replace the tire.


When You Actually Need a New Tire

  • The puncture is in the sidewall or shoulder
  • The puncture is larger than 1/4"
  • The tire has multiple punctures
  • The bead is leaking and the rim is too corroded to seal properly
  • The tire has less than 4/32" of tread remaining (plug it and replace it soon — or just replace now)
