Car Pulls to One Side? Here's How to Diagnose and Fix It

Few problems are as annoying — or as easy to misdiagnose — as a car that constantly drifts left or right when you let go of the wheel. Shops often jump straight to "you need an alignment" and charge $100–$150, but pulling can be caused by half a dozen different issues, some of which have nothing to do with alignment. This guide walks you through the full diagnostic process so you fix the right thing the first time.

Step 1: Check Tire Pressure (Free, 2 Minutes)

This causes more pulling complaints than any other single issue. A tire that's 5–8 PSI low on one side will pull toward that side. Check all four tires with a quality gauge (digital gauges are more accurate) and inflate to the door jamb spec — not the number on the tire sidewall.

If pressure is fine, proceed.


Step 2: Tire Swap Test

Swap the front tires side to side (move left front to right front, right front to left front) and drive again.

  • If the pull reverses direction → the problem is in a front tire (conicity, belt shift, or uneven wear)
  • If the pull stays the same → the problem is in the chassis/alignment/brakes, not the tires

Tire conicity is a manufacturing defect where the tire's steel belts are wound slightly off-center, causing the tire to act like a cone and roll in one direction. No alignment fix will correct a conical tire — it needs to be replaced.


Step 3: Check for Brake Drag

A sticking brake caliper is a common cause of pulling, especially on older vehicles or any vehicle that sat for an extended period. Signs:

  • Wheel is hot to the touch after a normal drive (one side noticeably hotter than the other)
  • Burning smell from one wheel
  • Pull gets worse on braking and then eases off
  • Vehicle hesitates/feels sluggish on acceleration as if something is holding it back

DIY test: After a 10–15 minute drive, carefully touch each front wheel near the center (not the rotor — it will be hot). A stuck caliper will make one wheel dramatically hotter than the other.

If you suspect brake drag: inspect the caliper slides for corrosion, check that the caliper piston retracts after pushing with a C-clamp. Slide pins can often be cleaned and greased ($10 in materials) to restore free movement.


Step 4: Inspect Suspension Components

With the car safely on jack stands, inspect:

Tie rod ends: Grab the front wheel at 9 and 3 o'clock and rock firmly. Any looseness felt in the tie rod end (a click or visible movement at the tie rod joint) indicates worn ends that will cause wandering and pulling.

Ball joints: Rock the wheel at 12 and 6 o'clock. Visible movement at the lower ball joint = replacement needed.

Control arm bushings: Look for cracked or collapsed rubber bushings at the inner pivot points of the control arms. A collapsed bushing changes camber and caster as the suspension moves.

Wheel bearing: Grab the wheel at 12 and 6 o'clock, then try to rock it — any in-and-out looseness suggests a worn wheel bearing, which can cause pulling and vibration.


Step 5: Check Alignment

If tires are fine, brakes are fine, and suspension components are within spec, you likely have an alignment issue. Alignment issues that cause pulling:

  • Camber difference side-to-side (more than 0.5° difference) — car pulls toward the side with more positive camber
  • Caster difference side-to-side — car pulls toward the side with less caster
  • Toe misalignment — typically causes tire wear and wandering more than outright pull

Note: Get alignment done after replacing worn suspension parts — not before. Aligning a car with worn tie rods or control arm bushings wastes money because the alignment will shift as the worn parts deflect.
