Bad ball joints are one of those repairs shops love to charge premium labor on. The part itself costs $25–$80; the labor bill often hits $300–$500 per axle. If you have a floor jack, jack stands, a ball joint press (rental available free at most auto parts stores), and a few hours, you can do this job yourself and pocket that money.

What Are Ball Joints and Why Do They Fail?

Ball joints are the pivot points connecting your control arms to the steering knuckle. They allow the suspension to move up and down while the wheel steers left and right. A worn ball joint has excess play in this pivot — which translates to wandering steering, uneven tire wear, and in severe cases, catastrophic suspension failure if the joint separates at speed.

Upper ball joints carry less load; lower ball joints bear the vehicle's weight and typically wear faster.

Typical replacement interval: No fixed interval — inspect at 80,000–100,000+ miles or when symptoms appear.


Symptoms of Bad Ball Joints

  • Clunking or knocking from the front suspension over bumps or during slow turns
  • Excessive play in the front wheels when rocked at 12 and 6 o'clock positions (a small amount at 9 and 3 is normal for tie rod wear, not ball joints)
  • Drifting or vague steering feel
  • Uneven or rapid tire wear on the inner or outer edges
  • Vibration that changes with steering input

DIY Inspection

  1. Lift the front of the car safely on jack stands
  2. Grab the wheel at 12 and 6 o'clock, then rock it firmly in and out
  3. Have a helper watch the ball joint — any visible movement of the joint itself (not just the wheel) indicates wear
  4. For press-in type ball joints: look for torn or cracked boots (grease leaking out = contamination in = accelerated wear)

Tools You'll Need

  • Floor jack and jack stands (essential — never work under a car on a jack alone)
  • Breaker bar and socket set (21mm for most lug nuts, 17–22mm for ball joint nut)
  • Torque wrench
  • Ball joint press / C-clamp kit — rent free at AutoZone, O'Reilly, Advance Auto
  • Pickle fork or ball joint separator (rent or buy, ~$15)
  • Tie rod end remover (optional but helpful)
  • Penetrating oil (PB Blaster, Kroil)

Step-by-Step Ball Joint Replacement

Step 1: Soak the Hardware

24 hours before the job (or at minimum the night before), soak all the fasteners you'll be removing with penetrating oil — particularly the ball joint nut and the pinch bolt on the knuckle if applicable. This dramatically reduces the risk of rounded fasteners or snapped studs.

Step 2: Lift the Vehicle and Remove the Wheel

Jack up the front corner, place a jack stand under the frame or pinch weld (check your service manual for safe jack points), and remove the wheel.

On many vehicles, the sway bar end link attaches near the lower ball joint area. Remove it first (often 17mm nut on each side, ~2 minutes).

Step 4: Remove the Ball Joint Nut

The ball joint castle nut is usually 21–22mm. Remove the cotter pin (if equipped), then break the nut loose. If the stud spins, use a hex wrench in the center of the stud to hold it while turning the nut.

Step 5: Separate the Ball Joint from the Knuckle

Use a ball joint separator or pickle fork driven between the knuckle and ball joint stud. A sharp strike with a hammer on the knuckle boss (not the stud!) will often pop the taper free.

Caution: The suspension will drop when the ball joint releases. Keep clear of pinch points.

Step 6: Remove the Ball Joint from the Control Arm

Press-in ball joints require the ball joint press kit. Set up the press with the correct adapter cups, position the control arm, and press the old joint out. This step takes some patience — apply steady force and use penetrating oil if the joint is stubborn.

Step 7: Press In the New Ball Joint

Reverse the press setup to install the new joint. Apply a thin film of grease on the outer diameter before pressing. Press until fully seated — the joint should sit flush with or below the control arm face.

Step 8: Reassemble and Torque

  • Insert the ball joint stud into the knuckle
  • Torque the ball joint nut to spec (typically 40–80 ft-lbs depending on vehicle — check your service manual)
  • Install a new cotter pin (never reuse the old cotter pin)
  • Reinstall the sway bar end link
  • Reinstall the wheel and torque lug nuts

Step 9: Get an Alignment

Any suspension work that changes a component connected to the steering geometry requires a wheel alignment afterward. Don't skip this — misalignment eats tires.
