Control arm replacement is one of those jobs that sounds intimidating but is genuinely achievable for a home mechanic with basic tools and a few hours. The parts typically cost $60–$150 per arm; shops charge $400–$700 including labor. Here's everything you need to know to do it yourself.

A control arm (also called an A-arm or wishbone) links the vehicle's chassis to the wheel hub and allows the suspension to travel up and down over bumps. Each arm contains two or more rubber bushings at the chassis mounting points and a ball joint at the wheel end.
Most front suspensions use lower control arms. Some designs also have upper control arms. Rear suspensions on many modern vehicles also use control arms.
Control arms fail in two main ways:
- Bushing deterioration — rubber bushings crack, harden, or separate with age
- Ball joint wear — the ball joint at the end of the arm develops excess play
On many vehicles, it's more cost-effective to replace the entire control arm (arm + bushing + ball joint as a pre-assembled unit) than to press out and replace each component separately.
Symptoms of a Worn Control Arm
- Clunking or banging from the front suspension over bumps or during braking
- Wandering steering or pulling to one side
- Vibration felt through the steering wheel at highway speeds
- Squeaking from the chassis end of the arm (deteriorated bushings)
- Uneven tire wear — often inner edge wear from camber change as bushings fail
- Visible cracking or separation of rubber bushings during visual inspection
Tools Required
- Floor jack and jack stands
- Breaker bar and metric/SAE socket set
- Torque wrench (ft-lb range, up to 150 ft-lbs for some mounting bolts)
- Pry bar
- Hammer and punch
- Ball joint separator (pickle fork or press-type — rental available free at parts stores)
- Penetrating oil (soak hardware the night before)
Step-by-Step: Lower Control Arm Replacement
Step 1: Penetrating Oil Pre-Treatment
The night before: spray all control arm mounting bolts (typically 2 chassis pivot bolts) and the ball joint castle nut with PB Blaster or Kroil. Corroded hardware is the #1 time-killer on this job.
Step 2: Raise and Support the Vehicle
Lift the vehicle under the frame (not the control arm — you need the arm to hang freely). Place jack stands under the frame at both front corners. Remove the wheel.
Step 3: Disconnect the Sway Bar End Link
The sway bar end link often passes through or near the control arm. Disconnect it from the control arm end (usually a 15–18mm nut) and allow it to hang free.
Step 4: Separate the Ball Joint
Remove the cotter pin and ball joint castle nut. Use a ball joint separator to pop the stud free from the steering knuckle. Have a pry bar ready to support the knuckle as the arm drops away.
Step 5: Remove the Pivot Bolts
The control arm typically attaches to the subframe via one or two long through-bolts. These can require significant force to break loose — use a breaker bar. Once loose, support the arm with your free hand and remove the bolts.
On many vehicles, one bolt passes through a compliance bushing that must be compressed to align with the frame holes. This bolt is notoriously difficult — patience and the right angle help.
Step 6: Remove the Old Arm
With both pivot bolts removed and the ball joint separated, the arm drops free. Compare the old and new arms to confirm correct replacement before installing.
Step 7: Install the New Control Arm
- Position the new arm, aligning the bushing bores with the subframe holes
- Install the pivot bolts hand-tight (do not fully torque yet)
- Reconnect the ball joint stud to the knuckle and torque the nut to spec
- Install a new cotter pin
Step 8: Final Torque — Bushings Must Be Loaded
This is the most important step most DIYers get wrong: control arm pivot bolts must be torqued with the suspension at ride height, not with the vehicle on jack stands.
Why: rubber bushings are designed to flex in the direction of suspension travel from a neutral position corresponding to ride height. If you torque the pivot bolts with the suspension hanging, the bushings will be pre-twisted at rest, causing accelerated wear and a stiff ride.
To torque correctly:
- With wheels on but lug nuts loose, lower the car so the tires just contact the ground
- Have a helper sit in the car to compress the suspension to approximate ride height
- Torque the pivot bolts to spec (typically 100–140 ft-lbs)
- Then raise, reinstall wheels, torque lug nuts
Step 9: Alignment
Mandatory after any control arm replacement. Budget $80–$120 for a four-wheel alignment.
