Water is an electrical conductor — in the wrong places, it bridges connections that should stay isolated. At the same time, moisture makes high-voltage ignition components more likely to arc to ground instead of firing the spark plug. The result: a car that worked fine in dry weather suddenly misfires, stumbles, or won't start at all once the humidity climbs.
Cause 1: Wet or Cracked Distributor Cap (Older Vehicles)
If your car is older (pre-2000s) and uses a distributor, this is the first thing to check. The distributor cap sits near the top of the engine and routes high voltage from the coil to each spark plug. Cracks in the cap let moisture in, which gives the voltage somewhere to go besides the spark plug — so the plugs don't fire.
Fix: Remove the distributor cap (usually held by two screws or clips) and look for cracks, carbon tracks (dark lines inside the cap where voltage arced), or moisture inside. Spray the inside dry with compressed air or electrical contact cleaner. If you see cracks or carbon tracking, replace the cap and rotor.
Cause 2: Wet Ignition Wires (Spark Plug Wires)
Spark plug wires carry tens of thousands of volts. Old or brittle wires develop cracks in the insulation — invisible in dry weather but a problem when moisture fills those cracks and creates a path to ground. The spark takes the path of least resistance and bypasses the plug entirely.
What you'll see: Misfires under load or at idle, engine stumbling in the rain, but running fine once the engine warms up and dries out.
Fix: In the dark, look at the engine while it idles. Wet ignition wires sometimes arc visibly — you'll see small sparks or flashes along the wire. Replace any wires showing cracked insulation, and check that the wire boots seal tightly to the spark plug wells.
Cause 3: Water Intrusion in the Air Intake
This one is different — and more serious. If water physically entered the engine's air intake (through a low-mounted intake or a flooded road), the engine may have hydrolocked: water entered the cylinder, and since water doesn't compress, it bent a connecting rod or worse.
Signs of hydrolock: Car cranks but won't start, unusual knocking or grinding sound when cranking, oil dipstick shows frothy or milky contamination.
What to do: If you drove through deep water and the car immediately stalled, do not attempt to restart it without first removing the spark plugs and cranking over to expel water. Take this to a mechanic if you're not confident — hydrolock repair can range from spark plug replacement to engine rebuild depending on damage.
Cause 4: Corroded or Wet Battery Terminals
Rain or high humidity can accelerate terminal corrosion and cause enough resistance to prevent reliable starting. A battery with clean terminals will start fine; a battery with corroded terminals may deliver just enough power to crank weakly but not enough to fire.

Cause 5: Flooded Engine (Carburetor Vehicles)
On older carbureted cars, overly rich starting attempts (repeated cranking) can flood the engine with fuel. This is more likely if someone has been cranking repeatedly trying to start it in the rain.
Fix: Hold the accelerator pedal fully to the floor and crank for 5–10 seconds. This "clear flood" position cuts fuel delivery and helps clear excess fuel. Don't pump the pedal — hold it steady.
Cause 6: Wet Coil-on-Plug or Coil Pack
Modern engines use coil-on-plug ignition systems or coil packs. While these are generally more weather-resistant than distributor systems, they're not immune. Moisture intrusion into the spark plug well (especially on engines where the plug sits deep in the valve cover) can cause misfires.
Check: Remove the coil-on-plug connectors and look for moisture or corrosion at the electrical connector. Dry with compressed air and apply dielectric grease to the connector before reinstalling.
