How to Diagnose a Blown Fuse in Your Car
One minute your radio works. The next it's completely dead. Or your power windows won't move. Or your interior lights are out, but everything else seems fine. When a single electrical component stops working with no warning, the first thing to check — before anything else — is the fuse. It's a 5-minute job that could save you a $100 diagnostic fee at the shop.

A fuse is designed to fail on purpose. When too much current flows through a circuit — from a short, a faulty component, or an overload — the fuse element melts and breaks the circuit before the wiring harness can catch fire. That's the whole point.
A blown fuse always has a cause. If you replace a fuse and it immediately blows again, there's an underlying fault in the circuit you need to find before just stuffing in another fuse.
Step 1: Find the Fuse Box
Most modern vehicles have two fuse locations:
1. Interior fuse box (passenger compartment) Usually located under the dashboard on the driver's side, or sometimes in the center console. Check along the lower left edge of the dash — there's often a small panel cover you can pop off by hand or with a flathead screwdriver.
2. Under-hood fuse box Located in the engine bay, usually near the battery. It handles higher-current circuits like the cooling fan, ABS pump, and main power relay. It's typically a black plastic box with a removable cover.
Your owner's manual has the exact location and a diagram of what each fuse controls. If you don't have the manual, search "[your car year/make/model] fuse box diagram" — you'll find the layout quickly.
Step 2: Identify the Fuse That Covers the Dead Circuit
Using the fuse diagram on the cover or in the manual, find the fuse that corresponds to the component that stopped working. Common examples:
- Radio/infotainment — labeled "RADIO," "ACC," or "AMP"
- Power windows — labeled "PWR WINDOW" or "WINDOW"
- Interior lights — labeled "DOME," "INTERIOR," or "COURTESY"
- AC blower — labeled "BLOWER" or "HVAC"
- Cigarette lighter/12V power outlet — labeled "CIG," "PWR OUTLET," or "ACCESSORY"
Step 3: Inspect and Test the Fuse
Visual inspection: Pull the fuse straight out using the plastic fuse puller usually clipped inside the fuse box cover, or use needlenose pliers. Hold it up to the light. A blown fuse will show a melted or broken element inside the transparent body, or a dark burn mark.
Multimeter test (more reliable): Set your multimeter to continuity mode (the setting that beeps) or resistance. Touch one probe to each end of the fuse. A good fuse beeps (continuity). A blown fuse shows no continuity.
Note: Always pull the fuse to inspect it — looking at fuses in the box while they're installed is inaccurate.
Step 4: Replace With the Correct Amperage
Fuses are color-coded by amperage rating and come in several physical sizes (mini, standard, maxi). The amperage rating is printed on the fuse itself and on the fuse box diagram.
Never install a higher-amperage fuse than specified. A 20A fuse in a 10A circuit won't protect the wiring — it'll let too much current flow and could cause a fire or melt the wiring harness. Always match the rating exactly.
Common automotive fuse amperages and colors (standard blade fuses):
- 5A — tan/beige
- 7.5A — brown
- 10A — red
- 15A — blue
- 20A — yellow
- 25A — natural/clear
- 30A — green
Replacement fuses are available at any auto parts store, usually in multi-packs. A fuse assortment pack is useful to keep in the glove box.
Step 5: If the New Fuse Blows Immediately
This means there's an active fault in the circuit. Don't keep installing fuses — you need to find the problem first.
Common causes:
- Damaged wiring (chafed insulation creating a short to ground)
- A failed component with an internal short (motor, solenoid, actuator)
- Aftermarket accessories wired incorrectly
- Rodent damage to the wiring harness
To diagnose a short: disconnect the components on the circuit one at a time, replacing the fuse each time. When the fuse stops blowing after a disconnect, you've isolated the faulty component or section of wiring.
When to Check Multiple Fuses
Some circuits share a fuse with related functions. If two unrelated things stopped working at once, check the junction box — some circuits combine multiple functions on a single fuse. Also check if your vehicle has a fusible link or a main power relay that could be the real failure point.
