- Socket set (metric, including 30mm or 32mm for axle nut)
- Breaker bar
- Pry bar or CV axle puller
- Rubber mallet or dead-blow hammer
- Torque wrench
- New CV axle assembly (comes with new boots and joints)
- New axle nut (one-time use — buy with the axle)
- Cotter pin (if your nut uses one)
- CV axle grease (usually included with the new axle)
Step-by-Step Instructions

Break the axle nut loose before jacking the car. The axle nut is usually 30mm or 32mm and is torqued to 150–200 ft-lbs. With the wheel on the ground, put the car in park (or have someone hold the brakes), use a breaker bar, and crack the nut loose. Don't remove it yet — just break it free.

Jack up the car and support it on jack stands. Remove the wheel. Fully remove the axle nut and washer.

Disconnect the lower ball joint or control arm. Depending on your vehicle, you'll either disconnect the lower ball joint from the knuckle using a pickle fork or press tool, or remove the lower control arm bolt. This gives you the clearance to pull the axle.

Pull the outer CV joint from the wheel hub. The outer joint splines into the hub. You may need to push it from behind with a punch while wiggling the knuckle outward. On some vehicles the hub needs to be pulled toward you while pushing the axle shaft inward.

Remove the inner CV joint from the transmission. This is where a pry bar comes in. Place the pry bar between the inner joint and the transmission case and lever it out — the joint snaps into the differential output with a retaining ring. One solid pop usually does it. Don't pry against soft aluminum transmission housings.

Compare old and new axle. Match the length, spline count (outer), and joint diameter. A wrong-length axle will bind or separate at speed — this is not a place to guess.

Install the inner joint into the transmission. Push it straight in until you feel/hear it snap into the retaining ring. Give it a tug to confirm it's locked in.

Insert the outer joint splines into the wheel hub. Thread the new axle nut on by hand to protect the threads while you're lining everything up.

Reconnect the ball joint or control arm. Torque to spec. Install a new cotter pin if applicable.

Torque the axle nut. Usually 150–200 ft-lbs — consult your spec. A torque wrench is not optional here. A loose axle nut can back out at speed and destroy the hub. Install a new cotter pin if your design uses one; if not, stake the nut with a punch to prevent loosening.
Pro Tips
- Reman vs. new axle shafts — remanufactured axles are fine for most applications. If the first reman clicks on delivery (rare but it happens), return it and try another. Buy from a reputable parts supplier with a warranty.
- Protect the inner boot during installation — don't let the inner boot catch on the subframe or axle snapping into the diff. A torn boot on a new axle is frustrating and means immediate grease loss.
- Check both axles while you're in there — if one is clicking, inspect the other. Axles wear at similar rates on same-mileage cars.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Forgetting to torque the axle nut — hand-tight is not enough. Under-torqued axle nuts back out and destroy hubs. Over-torqued ones can damage bearings. Use a torque wrench.
- Installing the wrong axle — axle shafts are not universal. Match the part number to your year, make, model, and trim (FWD vs. AWD versions of the same car often have different axle lengths).
- Not confirming the inner joint is fully seated — if it's not fully snapped into the differential, it will pull out under load and leave you stranded. Tug-test every time.
