DIY requirement: Correct OEM or OEM-spec filter (check part number for your model), flathead screwdriver, maybe a panel clip tool.

How to do it:
- Look up your vehicle-specific procedure — filter housing location varies widely (under dashboard, behind glove box, passenger footwell panel).
- Remove the housing cover — usually 2–4 clips or screws.

4. Battery Cooling System Check — Every 30,000 Miles or 2 Years
Most liquid-cooled EV batteries use a dedicated coolant loop separate from the cabin heating system. This coolant degrades like any other coolant and needs periodic inspection and replacement.
DIY requirement: Correct coolant spec for your vehicle (this matters — EV battery coolant is often a specific formulation, not universal antifreeze), funnel, inspection light.
Time: 20–30 minutes for inspection; 60–90 minutes for a full flush.
What to check:
- Coolant level in the battery cooling reservoir (usually under the hood, separate from the cabin HVAC coolant).
- Coolant color — it should be the original color (often orange, pink, or blue depending on manufacturer spec). Dark, murky, or rusty coolant needs a flush.
- Check hoses for cracks or soft spots at the connection points.
Dealers charge $120–$200 for a battery coolant inspection. The actual inspection takes 5 minutes with a flashlight.
5. Brake Caliper Inspection and Cleaning — Every Year
Because regenerative braking handles most deceleration, friction brakes on EVs sit idle for long periods. Caliper slide pins can seize. Rotors develop a rust layer (especially in wet climates). This doesn't mean the brakes are failing — it means they need periodic movement and lubrication.
DIY requirement: Floor jack, jack stands, lug wrench, caliper pin slide grease (not brake grease — use the correct dielectric or caliper slide pin grease), wire brush, brake cleaner.
Time: 60–90 minutes for all four corners.
Process:
- Remove the wheel.
- Remove the caliper (2 bolts).
- Pull the slide pins — they should move freely.
- Clean with brake cleaner, then apply a thin coat of caliper slide pin grease.
- Inspect the rotor surface for heavy rust pitting (light surface rust is normal and cleans off after a few hard stops).
- Inspect pad thickness.
- Reinstall and torque caliper bolts to spec.
6. Wiper Blades — Every 6–12 Months
Same as any car. EV owners sometimes forget because they rarely visit service centers. Beam blades ($15–$25 each) install in 5 minutes and last significantly longer than traditional wipers in harsh climates.
7. TPMS Monitoring and Manual Pressure Checks
Your EV's TPMS monitors pressure but only triggers a warning when pressure is significantly low. Manual checks every 2–4 weeks keep tires in the optimal range for efficiency and wear.
