A burnt-out headlight is both a safety issue and an invitation for a traffic stop. Most shops will charge $50–$150 to replace what is, on many vehicles, a 15-minute job that costs $15–$30 in parts. On some modern vehicles the access is genuinely difficult — but on most cars made before 2015, headlight bulb replacement is a simple DIY task.
Here's how to do it, and what to know if you're considering upgrading to LED.

Halogen: The standard incandescent-style bulb found on most vehicles built before 2015. Recognizable by the tungsten filament inside. Warm yellowish light. Replacement cost: $10–$30 per bulb.
HID (High-Intensity Discharge / Xenon): Produces a bright, white-blue light via arc discharge. Common on mid-range to luxury vehicles in the 2005–2015 era. Ballasts and ignitors are separate from the bulb. Replacement cost: $25–$100+ per bulb. More complex to replace.
LED (factory): Modern LED headlights are integrated into the headlight housing and are not bulb-replaceable in the traditional sense. When factory LEDs fail, the headlight assembly must be replaced — a significantly more expensive job.

Finding the Right Bulb
Every vehicle uses a specific bulb standard for each light (low beam, high beam, fog light). Common sizes: H11, H7, H4, 9005 (HB3), 9006 (HB4).
Find your exact bulb size by:
- Looking in your owner's manual (bulb replacement section)
- Using the bulb size lookup at any major auto parts retailer (NAPA, AutoZone, Advance Auto)
- Looking on the inside of the bulb socket housing — the size is often printed there
Tools You'll Need
- Replacement bulbs (buy both at once — if one burned out, the other isn't far behind)
- Gloves or a clean cloth
- Screwdrivers or trim removal tools (some vehicles require partial bumper or headlight removal)
- Possibly a T20/T25 Torx driver for headlight housing bolts
Step-by-Step Halogen Bulb Replacement
1. Check Access First
Before you start, look at the back of the headlight housing from under the hood. On many vehicles — especially newer, tighter engine bays — the accessible path to the bulb socket ranges from "slightly awkward" to "requires bumper removal."
Look up your specific vehicle before assuming this is a 10-minute job. If the internet says "you have to pull the bumper," it's worth knowing ahead of time.
2. Disconnect the Battery (Optional but Smart)
You're working near electrical connectors in a dark, confined space. Disconnecting the negative battery terminal while the headlights are off is a smart precaution.
3. Access the Bulb Socket
From the engine bay, locate the back of the headlight assembly. The bulb socket is a round connector (usually 3-wire) held in place by a twist-lock, retaining spring, or retaining ring. Twist counter-clockwise or unhook the wire spring to release it.
4. Remove the Old Bulb
The bulb slides or locks into the socket. On many halogen bulbs, a metal clip or lock ring holds them in. Depress the clip, rotate the bulb, and pull it straight out. Don't touch the new bulb's glass with bare fingers — see below.
5. Install the New Bulb — Don't Touch the Glass
Oils from your skin on a halogen bulb create hot spots on the glass when the bulb heats up, dramatically shortening its life. Handle the new bulb by the socket base or use a clean cloth or gloves.
Slide the new bulb into position, lock it with the clip or ring, and reconnect the socket.
6. Test Before Reinstalling Anything
Reconnect the battery, turn the headlights on, and verify the bulb works before you close up the engine bay or reinstall any access panels.
Upgrading to LED Bulbs
Aftermarket LED drop-in replacement bulbs (sold as "H11 LED," "H7 LED," etc.) can replace halogen bulbs in existing housings. Pros and cons:
Pros:
- Significantly brighter than halogen (5,000–8,000 lumens vs. 1,000–1,500 for halogen)
- Whiter, more natural light
- Longer lifespan (30,000+ hours vs. 500–1,000 for halogen)
Cons:
- Projector housings vs. reflector housings matter — LEDs in reflector housings can create glare for oncoming traffic if the light isn't properly focused
- Some vehicles require a CANBUS adapter to prevent "bulb out" error messages
- Quality varies enormously — cheap LED bulbs produce poor beam patterns. Buy from reputable brands (Philips, Osram, Morimoto).
Common Mistakes
- Mismatched bulbs — replacing only the burnt-out side. Buy a matched pair and replace both.
- Touching the bulb glass — skin oils cause premature failure on halogen bulbs.
- Cheap LEDs with bad beam patterns — illegal in some states, cause glare, and actually reduce your own visibility with scattered light.
- Forgetting to test before buttoning up — always test before reinstalling any trim panels.
