Why Headlights Go Cloudy

Modern headlight lenses are made of polycarbonate plastic, which is lightweight and impact-resistant. The downside: polycarbonate is vulnerable to UV radiation. Manufacturers apply a thin UV-protective coating at the factory, but it degrades over 3–8 years depending on sun exposure and climate.

Once the coating fails, the polycarbonate oxidizes, turning yellow, hazy, and opaque. This isn't just cosmetic — cloudy headlights can reduce light output by 50–80% compared to clear lenses.


Restoration Methods (From Basic to Best)

Method 1: Toothpaste (Free, Temporary)

Regular whitening toothpaste is a mild abrasive that can remove surface oxidation.

  • Apply toothpaste to a damp cloth, rub in circular motions for 2–3 minutes, rinse off
  • Result: noticeable improvement that lasts 2–6 months before clouding returns
  • Best for: emergency use when you need temporary improvement

Method 2: Headlight Restoration Kit ($10–$20, Best Value)

A proper kit includes progressively finer sandpaper grades, a polishing compound, and (critically) a UV sealant. This is the method that actually lasts.

  • 400, 1000, 2000, 3000 grit wet/dry sandpaper

Step-by-Step Headlight Restoration (Kit Method)

1. Mask the Surrounding Paint

Apply painter's tape around the entire perimeter of each headlight lens, covering the paint and trim. The sandpaper will scratch anything unprotected.

2. Wash the Headlights

Clean with soap and water to remove dirt and debris. Dry completely.

3. Wet Sand — Start Coarse, Work Fine

Soak the sandpaper in water. Starting with the lowest grit (400 or as directed), sand the lens in horizontal strokes with moderate pressure for 2–3 minutes. The lens will look worse — foggy and scratched. This is normal.

Rinse the lens, dry it, and repeat with the next finer grit — typically 1000, then 2000, then 3000 if included. Each step removes the scratches left by the previous grit. After the finest grit, the lens should look uniformly hazy but without deep scratches.

4. Apply Polishing Compound

Apply a small amount of plastic polishing compound to a clean microfiber cloth or applicator pad. Polish in circular motions for 2–3 minutes. The lens should begin to clear noticeably. Buff off the residue and inspect. Repeat if needed.

5. Apply UV Sealant — Don't Skip This

This is the step that determines how long the results last. Without UV sealant, the polished lens will re-oxidize within 3–6 months. Apply 2–3 thin coats of the included UV clear coat or sealant, allowing each coat to cure per directions.

Some kits use a spray-on UV coat. Others use a wipe-on film. Either works — the key is coverage and cure time.

6. Remove Tape and Inspect

Remove the masking tape before the sealant fully cures (while still slightly tacky) to prevent pulling. The lenses should be dramatically clearer.


Common Mistakes

  • Skipping the UV sealant — the improvement looks great immediately but fades fast without protection
  • Not masking the paint — 400-grit sandpaper on clear coat is a painful and expensive mistake
  • Rushing the sanding progression — skipping grits leaves scratches that compound alone won't remove
  • Dry sanding — always wet-sand polycarbonate. Dry sanding generates heat that can distort or melt the lens.

How Long Do Results Last?

With proper UV sealant, a professional restoration should last 1–3 years. Budget restorations without quality sealant: 3–12 months. Some shops apply automotive clear coat over restored headlights for maximum longevity.
