Brake fluid is one of the most overlooked maintenance items on any vehicle — and one of the most important. It absorbs moisture over time, which lowers its boiling point and can cause brake fade under hard use. A complete fluid flush takes about an hour, costs $10–$20 in materials, and is a natural extension of brake work you may already be doing. Here's the complete process.

Why Flush Brake Fluid?

Brake fluid is hygroscopic — it draws moisture from the atmosphere through brake hoses and seals. As water content increases:

  • The boiling point drops, which means heavy braking (descending a mountain, towing, track driving) can vaporize the fluid and cause brake fade or total brake failure
  • Internal components corrode — calipers, master cylinders, and ABS modulators are all damaged by moisture-contaminated fluid
  • The fluid turns dark — new brake fluid is pale yellow or clear; brown-black fluid is overdue for a change

Most manufacturers recommend flushing brake fluid every 2 years or 30,000 miles, regardless of appearance. Many drivers never do it.


What You'll Need

  • Fresh brake fluid — DOT 3, DOT 4, or DOT 5.1 (check your cap — never use DOT 5 silicone fluid in a system designed for glycol-based fluid)
  • Clear vinyl hose (fits over bleeder screws — about 3/16" inner diameter)
  • Catch container
  • Turkey baster or fluid transfer pump (for removing old fluid from the reservoir)
  • Wrench for bleeder screws (usually 8mm or 10mm)
  • Gloves — brake fluid strips paint and is corrosive to skin
  • A helper (recommended for the pedal method)

Step 1: Remove Old Fluid from the Reservoir

Open the master cylinder reservoir and use a turkey baster or hand pump to remove as much old fluid as possible. Refill with fresh fluid. This prevents old fluid from recirculating through the system during flushing.


Step 2: Identify the Bleeding Order

Start with the wheel farthest from the master cylinder and work toward the closest: typically right rear → left rear → right front → left front. This ensures the freshest fluid arrives last at the components you're most concerned about.


Step 3: Bleed Each Caliper

Attach vinyl hose to the first bleeder screw. Submerge the other end in your catch container with a small amount of fresh fluid (prevents air from being sucked back in).

Two-person method: Helper pumps pedal 3–4 times, holds it down. You crack the bleeder 1/4 turn. Fluid flows — close the bleeder, tell helper to release pedal. Repeat until fluid runs clear and pale yellow instead of brown or dark.

One-person method: Use a vacuum bleeder or pressure bleeder if working alone. These attach to the bleeder screw and allow you to pull or push fluid through without a helper.


Step 4: Keep the Reservoir Full

After each wheel, check the reservoir and top it off with fresh fluid before moving to the next wheel. If the reservoir runs empty, you'll pump air into the master cylinder and have to start over with extended bleeding. This is the most common mistake on a DIY flush.


Step 5: How to Know You're Done

Fresh brake fluid is clear or pale yellow. When the fluid coming out of each bleeder matches that color (not dark or brown), that wheel is done. After all four wheels are complete, the pedal should feel firm and high when the engine is running.


Step 6: Dispose Properly

Brake fluid cannot go in the trash or down the drain. Most auto parts stores accept used brake fluid — call ahead to confirm. It may also go with used motor oil at hazardous waste collection events.

Bleeding brakes removes air bubbles from lines (done after any caliper or line work). Flushing replaces the fluid itself for maintenance purposes. A flush includes bleeding — you're doing both at once.
