How to Install a Dash Cam in Your Car the Right Way

A dash cam is one of the best investments you can make for a vehicle. Insurance fraud, hit-and-runs, and disputed accidents happen — and without footage, it becomes your word against theirs. But most people either stick the cam loosely to the windshield with an ugly power cord dangling across the dash, or they don't bother because they assume installation is complicated.

Neither compromise is necessary. A clean, hidden dash cam install takes about an hour and requires basic tools. Here's how to do it right.

Two Installation Methods: Which One?

Option 1: Plug into a 12V outlet (cigarette lighter port)

  • Easiest, no wiring
  • Cord runs visibly across the dash
  • Cam only records when car is running (unless the outlet has always-on power)
  • Good if you rent or don't want a permanent install

Option 2: Hardwire via fuse box (recommended)

  • Clean — no visible cord
  • Can enable parking mode (records when the car is parked and detects motion/impact)
  • Requires a fuse tap kit ($10–15) and basic electrical work
  • Takes about 60–90 minutes

This guide focuses on the hardwire method since it gives you a professional-looking, fully functional install.


What You'll Need

  • Dash cam (with hardwire kit included, or purchase separately — MicroFUSE type is common)
  • Fuse tap kit (also called add-a-fuse or piggyback fuse tap)
  • Trim panel removal tools (plastic pry tools — don't use screwdrivers)
  • Wire clips or adhesive cable channels
  • Your vehicle's fuse box diagram (in the owner's manual or fuse box lid)
  • Test light or multimeter

Step 1: Choose Your Fuse Tap Locations

You need two things from the fuse box:

  1. Switched power (ACC): A fuse that only has power when the ignition is on. The camera records when you drive.
  2. Constant power: A fuse that always has power regardless of ignition. Required for parking mode monitoring.

Open the fuse box (usually under the dash on the driver's side, sometimes under the hood). Find the fuse diagram. Using a test light or multimeter:

  • Switched fuse: power only with ignition on (interior lights circuit, radio, cigarette lighter are common)
  • Constant fuse: power all the time (memory seats, clock, interior dome light)

Step 2: Route the Camera Power Cable

The dash cam mounts to the windshield, so you need to route the cable from the windshield down the A-pillar trim (the vertical trim pillar beside the windshield), under the dash, and to the fuse box.

  1. Mount the cam on the windshield, behind the rearview mirror — minimizes driver distraction and keeps it out of the camera's field of view
  2. Tuck the cable up into the headliner gap along the top of the windshield
  3. Pop the A-pillar trim panel off (gently — one firm pull outward at the base usually releases the clips)
  4. Route the cable down inside the A-pillar
  5. Route under the dash to the fuse box location

Use wire clips or adhesive cable mounts to secure the cable as you go. The goal is zero visible wiring.


Step 3: Install the Fuse Tap

Most hardwire kits end in a fuse tap adapter. The fuse tap:

  1. Plugs into an existing fuse slot
  2. Holds the original fuse on top
  3. Adds a second fused output for your camera

Pull the target fuse, verify its amperage, insert the fuse tap with the same-amperage original fuse on top, and plug in the camera's power wire. Connect the ground wire to a nearby bolt on the vehicle's chassis (look for an existing grounding point — many are visible near the fuse box).

Test before buttoning up: Turn the ignition on and verify the cam powers on. Turn it off and verify the parking mode functions as expected.


Step 4: Reinstall Trim and Clean Up

Reinstall the A-pillar trim panel. Tuck any excess cable behind the dash. The final result should look like the camera appeared there from the factory — no visible wires.


Positioning Tips

  • Angle the camera lens slightly downward — you want to capture the road ahead plus your hood, not sky
  • Make sure it doesn't interfere with your wiper park position
  • Check the camera's view in the app or screen before finalizing position — the mount is adjustable
