How to Read and Replace Fuses in Your Car's Fuse Box

Something electrical stopped working in your car — the radio, the power windows, the horn, the cigarette lighter — and it happened all at once. Before you assume it's a wiring disaster or a failed module, check the fuse. In a large percentage of cases, that's all it is: a $1 fuse that blew to protect the circuit, waiting for you to replace it.

Here's how to find it, test it, and fix it.

What Fuses Do

Fuses are designed to fail. They protect expensive components — modules, motors, wiring harnesses — by sacrificing themselves when a circuit draws more current than it's designed to handle. The fuse wire melts, breaking the circuit before anything else burns.

Every electrical circuit in your car is protected by at least one fuse. Some components share fuses; some have their own. A failed component can blow a fuse, but so can a wiring short, a bad ground, or a failing motor that draws excess current.

Important: A fuse that blows again immediately after replacement means there's an underlying fault. Don't keep replacing fuses — diagnose the root cause.


Finding Your Fuse Boxes

Most vehicles have two fuse boxes:

  1. Interior fuse box: Usually under the driver's side dash (pull the panel below the steering column) or in the lower part of the instrument panel. This handles interior circuits.

  2. Under-hood fuse box: A black plastic cover, usually near the battery. This handles high-current circuits: cooling fans, starter relay, ABS, fuel pump, engine management.

Some vehicles have a third fuse box in the trunk or under the rear seat for audio systems or rear accessories.


Reading the Fuse Diagram

Open the fuse box. On the lid (or nearby) you'll find a diagram or a folded card showing which fuse protects which circuit, and the fuse amperage. If the diagram is missing, it's also in your owner's manual.

Reading fuse amperage: Fuses are color-coded by amperage:

  • Gray = 2A
  • Violet = 3A
  • Pink = 4A
  • Tan = 5A
  • Brown = 7.5A
  • Red = 10A
  • Blue = 15A
  • Yellow = 20A
  • Clear/White = 25A
  • Green = 30A
  • Pink (large) = 30A (maxi fuse)

The amp rating is also printed directly on the fuse body.


Testing a Fuse

Visual inspection: Pull the fuse and hold it up to light. You can often see the metal strip inside — if it's melted or broken, the fuse is blown. But a fuse can look intact visually and still be blown if the element is cracked but not visually separated.

Test light method (most reliable):

  1. With the ignition on (circuit energized), probe both test points on top of the fuse with a test light while the fuse is still installed
  2. A working fuse has power on both sides — test light lights on both probes
  3. A blown fuse has power on one side and none on the other
  4. No power on either side = the fuse is fine but something upstream is cutting power

Multimeter method: Pull the fuse and measure resistance across the terminals. Working fuse = near zero ohms. Blown fuse = OL (open circuit).


Replacing the Fuse

  1. Pull the blown fuse using the fuse puller tool stored in the fuse box (the small plastic clip) or needlenose pliers
  2. Match the same amperage and same physical size — blade fuse types come in mini (ATC/ATM), standard (ATC/ATO), and maxi sizes
  3. Never install a higher-amperage fuse than specified — you'll protect the fuse and let the wiring or component burn instead
  4. Push the new fuse in firmly until it seats

After replacement, test the circuit. If it immediately blows again, there's a short or overload in the circuit — stop and diagnose before replacing again.


Finding a Short

If a fuse keeps blowing, the circuit has a problem. The most common causes:

  • A pinched wire touching the chassis (wires routed near sharp metal edges)
  • A water-damaged connector causing a short to ground
  • A failing motor (window regulator, blower motor) drawing excess current

To isolate: unplug every component connected to that fused circuit one at a time, replacing the fuse between each disconnection, until the fuse stops blowing. The last thing you unplugged is the culprit.
