How to Replace a Serpentine Belt (Without a Mechanic)

The serpentine belt drives your alternator, power steering pump, AC compressor, and water pump. When it snaps, your car stalls — and it won't restart until the belt is replaced. A shop charges $180–$300 for a job that takes 30–45 minutes at home with a belt tool or breaker bar and a $20–$35 belt. Here's how to do it.

Signs Your Serpentine Belt Needs Replacing

Most serpentine belts should be replaced every 60,000–100,000 miles. Don't wait for it to snap — that leaves you stranded. Replace proactively when you see:

  • Cracks in the ribs (the grooved underside of the belt)
  • Fraying or shredding along the edges
  • Glazing — the ribs look shiny instead of matte
  • Squealing on startup that goes away after a minute (glazed belt slipping)
  • Chirping during operation (misaligned or worn tensioner)
  • Age — if you don't know when it was last replaced and it's over 60,000 miles, replace it

What You'll Need

  • New serpentine belt (match to year/make/model — critical; wrong belt won't route correctly)
  • 3/8" or 1/2" drive breaker bar or ratchet
  • Belt routing diagram (on a sticker in the engine bay, or photo from your phone before removal)
  • Possibly a serpentine belt tool (a socket with an extension that fits over the tensioner bolt)
  • Flashlight

Step 1: Photograph the Belt Routing

Before touching the old belt, take a clear photo of the entire serpentine belt routing — how it wraps around each pulley. Most engine bays have a routing diagram sticker on the radiator shroud or hood underside. If yours is missing or hard to read, the photo is your insurance. Getting the routing wrong on reassembly means the belt will shred within minutes.


Step 2: Locate the Belt Tensioner

The belt tensioner is a spring-loaded pulley that keeps constant tension on the belt. It's usually labeled or obvious — look for the single pulley that isn't connected to a component like the alternator or AC compressor. There will be a square or hex socket hole in the center of the tensioner arm.


Step 3: Release Belt Tension

Insert your breaker bar or serpentine belt tool into the tensioner. Rotate the tensioner in the direction that releases tension — usually clockwise for most vehicles, but check your specific diagram. Hold the tensioner rotated while you slip the belt off one of the pulleys.

This step requires some force — tensioner springs are stiff. You may need a 3-foot breaker bar for leverage. On very tight tensioners, a second person holding the tensioner while you remove the belt is helpful.


Step 4: Remove the Old Belt

With tension released, slide the belt off all the pulleys. Route it out around any components it weaves through.


Step 5: Inspect the Tensioner and Idler Pulleys

While the belt is off:

  • Spin each pulley by hand. They should spin freely and smoothly. Any roughness, grinding, or wobble indicates a failing bearing — replace the tensioner or idler pulley while you're in there. A new belt on a failing tensioner will fail prematurely.
  • Check the tensioner spring. It should return firmly. A soft or weak tensioner loses its ability to keep the belt tight.

Step 6: Route and Install the New Belt

Following your photo or the routing diagram, thread the new belt around all pulleys except the tensioner. Leave the tensioner for last.

Hold the belt in position on all pulleys, then rotate the tensioner the same direction as before (relieving tension) and slip the belt over the tensioner pulley. Release the tensioner — it will snap back and apply tension to the belt.


Step 7: Verify Routing and Start the Engine

Before starting, double-check the belt is seated correctly in each pulley groove. A misrouted belt will snap within seconds of engine start.

Start the engine and watch the belt for 30 seconds. It should run smoothly with no squealing, no wobble, and no slipping off any pulley. Check for any unusual noises.
