How to Replace a Car Thermostat and Stop Overheating for Under $30

The thermostat is a $10–$25 part that can leave you stranded if it fails. A stuck-closed thermostat causes overheating in minutes; a stuck-open thermostat means the engine never reaches operating temperature, killing fuel economy and heater output. This is one of the easiest cooling system jobs there is.

  • Flathead screwdriver
  • Drain pan
  • Fresh coolant (50/50 pre-mix or concentrate + distilled water)
  • New thermostat + gasket or O-ring (buy OEM spec)
  • Gasket scraper or razor blade
  • Thread sealant (if using a paper gasket without built-in sealant)
  • Funnel

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Let the engine cool completely. Opening a hot coolant system is dangerous — pressurized steam and boiling coolant. Wait at least 2 hours after the last run, or overnight.

  2. Locate the thermostat housing. Follow the upper radiator hose — it runs from the top of the radiator to the thermostat housing on the engine. On some engines it's the lower hose. The housing is usually held by 2–3 bolts.

  3. Drain some coolant. You don't need to drain the whole system — just enough so the level drops below the thermostat housing. Open the radiator drain petcock or disconnect the lower hose at the radiator. Catch the coolant in a drain pan.

  4. Remove the upper radiator hose from the housing. Use a flathead screwdriver to loosen the hose clamp and twist/pull the hose free. Expect some residual coolant to drip.

  5. Remove the thermostat housing bolts. Usually 2–3 bolts, 10mm or 8mm. Set the bolts somewhere clean — a magnetic parts tray keeps them from rolling away.

  6. Remove the housing and old thermostat. The housing may be stuck from old gasket material. A light tap with a rubber mallet breaks it free. Pull out the old thermostat. Note which end faces the engine (the spring end goes toward the engine).

  7. Clean the mating surfaces. Use a gasket scraper or razor blade to remove all old gasket material from both the housing and engine. Even a small chunk left behind causes leaks.

  8. Install the new thermostat. Spring end toward the engine. The thermostat should sit in the recessed groove — confirm it seats flat before putting the housing on.

  9. Install new gasket and reassemble. Apply a thin bead of RTV sealant to the housing if using a paper gasket without pre-applied sealant. Torque housing bolts to spec (typically 8–12 ft-lbs) — don't overtighten or you'll crack an aluminum housing.

  10. Refill coolant, burp the system, and test. Refill the reservoir and radiator with fresh 50/50 mix. Start the engine with the heat on full blast — this helps bleed air pockets. Watch the temp gauge and look for the thermostat opening (temp will rise, then stabilize as coolant flows). Check for leaks at the housing.

Pro Tips

  • Test the old thermostat before assuming it's failed — drop it in a pot of boiling water. It should open at the rated temperature (stamped on the flange). If it doesn't move, it's dead.
  • Buy OEM or OEM-equivalent — cheap thermostats from discount bins fail again quickly. Spend the extra $5 for a name brand.
  • Bleed the air properly — trapped air pockets cause false overheating readings even after a good thermostat install.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Installing the thermostat backwards — the spring faces the engine block, not the radiator. Backwards installation means the thermostat never opens properly.
  • Skipping the gasket scrape — any old gasket material left on the surface means coolant leaks. Take the extra 10 minutes to clean it fully.
  • Not burping the cooling system — air pockets cause phantom overheating and heater problems. Run the engine with the cap off and gently squeeze the upper hose until no more bubbles come out.
