- KL (2014–present) — the modern compact SUV Cherokee. FCA platform, more technology, more complexity.
Oil Changes by Generation
XJ Cherokee (4.0L I6 — The Legend)
The 4.0L AMC straight-six is one of the most durable engines ever put in an American vehicle. It's been known to go 300,000+ miles with decent maintenance.
Oil spec: 10W-30 conventional was the original recommendation; 5W-30 full synthetic is better for modern use, especially in cold climates or high-mileage engines. Capacity: 6 quarts with filter Interval: 3,000 miles with conventional (older motor), 5,000–7,500 with synthetic
The XJ 4.0L has a cartridge-style oil filter housing on later models — use the correct wrench. The drain plug is accessible and the job is routine. The engine bay on an XJ is large enough to work in comfortably.
Also available in some XJs: 2.5L I4 (4-cylinder). Same simplicity, lower capacity (~4 quarts).
KJ Cherokee Liberty (2.4L I4 and 3.7L V6)
2.4L I4 — Oil spec: 5W-30 synthetic. Capacity: 5 quarts. 3.7L V6 — Oil spec: 5W-30 synthetic. Capacity: 6 quarts. Interval: 5,000 miles with synthetic
The 3.7L V6 in the KJ is a Chrysler PowerTech engine. It's adequate but not the 4.0L's equal. Watch for oil consumption on high-mileage examples — valve guide seals can wear and cause a blue smoke puff on startup.
KL Cherokee (2.4L Tigershark and 3.2L Pentastar V6)
2.4L Tigershark — Oil spec: 0W-20 full synthetic. Capacity: 5.5 quarts. 3.2L Pentastar V6 — Oil spec: 0W-20 full synthetic. Capacity: 5.5 quarts. Interval: 8,000–10,000 miles per FCA's recommendation with full synthetic
The KL's engines are modern, tight-tolerance powerplants. The 0W-20 specification is not negotiable — these engines are calibrated for ultra-low viscosity oil.
Spark Plugs by Generation
XJ 4.0L I6
Six plugs in a row. Easy to access. Recommended: Champion RC12YC or equivalent. Interval: 30,000 miles with copper (the old spec), or upgrade to NGK iridium for 60,000+ intervals. The 4.0L is not sensitive to plug brands — it's a robust design.
KJ 3.7L V6
Six plugs. The rear bank (firewall side) requires a flex extension to reach. Recommended: Champion 3570 or NGK equivalent. Interval: 30,000 miles with standard plugs.
KL 2.4L / 3.2L
2.4L Tigershark: Four plugs, straightforward access. Iridium plugs at 60,000-mile intervals. 3.2L Pentastar: Six plugs. Rear bank access is tight in the KL's engine bay. Use iridium plugs rated for 60,000–100,000 miles. The Pentastar V6 is picky about plug quality — use NGK or Champion OEM-equivalent iridium, not cheap copper.
4WD and Transfer Case Service
XJ — Command-Trac and Selec-Trac
The XJ uses a part-time 4WD system (Command-Trac) on most trims, with full-time available on Selec-Trac models. Both use a NP231 or NP242 transfer case.
Transfer case fluid: ATF+4 (Mopar specification) or Dexron III Service interval: Every 30,000 miles
The NP231 and NP242 are legendary transfer cases. Simple, rebuildable, widely supported by the off-road community. The main service item is fluid — drain, inspect for debris, refill.
Front axle (Dana 30): 75W-90 GL-5 gear oil. 30,000-mile intervals for off-road use, 60,000 for street. Rear axle (Dana 35 or Dana 44): Same spec. If you have the Dana 35, be aware of its reputation for fragility under serious off-road loads — the Dana 44 (available on Sport and Limited XJs) is significantly stronger.
KJ — NV231 Transfer Case
Similar to the XJ's NP231. ATF+4 fluid, same service intervals. Rear axle is a Dana 35 on most KJ Liberties.
KL — Active Drive
The KL uses an electronically-controlled Active Drive AWD system — not a traditional part-time 4WD setup. It's designed for automatic engagement, not manual low-range crawling.
PTU (Power Transfer Unit) fluid: The PTU on the front axle needs fluid changes that Jeep/FCA does NOT list in the owner's manual, but independent mechanics universally recommend. Use 75W-140 GL-5 gear oil every 30,000–45,000 miles. PTUs run dry and fail on KLs that never have this done — it's a $1,500+ repair versus a $15 fluid service.
Rear drive module fluid: Same story. Change the fluid every 30,000–45,000 miles. Fluid spec: 75W-90 GL-5.
This is the most important maintenance tip for KL Cherokee owners. Do not skip the PTU fluid change.
Axle Seals: Common on XJ and KJ
The front axle seals on the Dana 30 (XJ) and Dana 30/35 (KJ) are a known wear item, especially on high-mileage trucks and those that see water crossings. A leaking axle seal shows up as gear oil seeping from behind the front wheel on the inboard side of the rotor.
The repair: Remove the halfshaft (requires disconnecting the front CV axle), pull the old seal from the axle tube, press or tap in the new seal, reinstall. It's achievable for a confident DIYer. The parts are cheap ($10–20 for the seal). The labor at a shop runs $150–300.
The XJ rear axle seals (Dana 35 or Dana 44) are similarly easy to service. They're the same basic repair — pull the axle, replace the seal.
Common Issues by Generation
XJ (1984–2001)
Leaking valve cover gasket — essentially universal on high-mileage XJ 4.0Ls. The oil filler cap area and the rear of the cover are the first to go. Replace with a quality aftermarket gasket (Felpro or better). Torque the bolts to spec — overtightening cracks the cover.
Cracked exhaust manifold — the cast iron exhaust manifold on the 4.0L cracks at the ports due to thermal cycling. A cracked manifold causes an exhaust tick that changes tone with engine temperature. Replacement manifolds are cheap; the job requires the manifold to be cold and patience with rusty studs.
Coolant leaks at the water pump — the water pump on the 4.0L is driven off the timing chain cover and is a routine replacement item at 100,000 miles.
KJ Liberty (2002–2007)
Rear window wiper and liftgate — the rear wiper motor and liftgate latch mechanism are common failure points on KJ Liberties. Not a safety item but an annoyance.
Transfer case fluid seal — the NV231 on the KJ can develop a leak where the transfer case attaches to the transmission. Check periodically.
KL (2014–Present)
PTU/Rear drive module failure — as mentioned above, this is the big one. Fluid changes prevent it.
9-Speed ZF Transmission — the 9-speed automatic in the KL Cherokee had software issues in early production (2014–2016) causing rough shifts, hunting between gears, and hesitation. FCA issued multiple software calibration updates. If your KL shifts poorly, check whether the latest TCM calibration has been applied.
3.2L Pentastar cylinder head oil consumption — some 3.2L Pentastar engines consume oil at higher mileage. Monitor your level between changes.
