- Worn track bar or track bar bushings
- Loose track bar mounting bolts (check torque spec: 74 ft-lb for JK)
- Worn control arm bushings or ball joints
- Worn drag link or tie rod ends
- Out-of-balance tires or improper alignment
DIY fix: Start with the simplest things. Check every front-end bolt torque before buying anything. Then inspect the track bar ends — if there's any play, replace it. A track bar for a JK costs $60–$150 aftermarket. While you're there, inspect ball joints, drag link, and tie rod ends for play. If you've added a lift kit, a track bar relocation bracket is often needed to correct geometry.
Pro tip: Heavy aftermarket wheels and tires dramatically worsen death wobble tendency. Make sure wheels are properly balanced and within the axle's weight rating.
2. Dana 30 and Dana 44 Axle Problems
Most Wranglers come with a Dana 30 front axle — it's adequate for street use but shows wear faster if you run larger tires or do moderate off-roading. Dana 44s (rear, or front on Rubicon models) are stronger but not immune to problems.
Common issues:
- U-joints wearing out prematurely (especially with 33"+ tires)
- Axle shaft seal leaks (oil spots under the axle differential)
- Differential fluid breakdown (should be changed every 30,000 miles or after water crossing)
DIY fix: U-joint replacement is a garage-friendly job — press-in joints require a ball joint press or C-clamp method, and cost $15–$30 per joint in parts. Axle seal replacement is similarly straightforward: drain the differential, unbolt the axle, replace the seal, and refill with the correct 75W-90 or 80W-90 gear oil (plus friction modifier if you have the limited-slip rear).
Differential fluid service: drain plug on the bottom, fill plug on the side. Fluid in, fill to the lip of the fill hole, done. Cost: $15–$25 in gear oil.
3. Transfer Case Leaks and Fluid Service
Wranglers are equipped with NP231, NP241, or (on later models) Rock-Trac transfer cases. All of them can develop leaks at the front or rear output seals, and all of them have fluid that needs periodic service.
DIY fix: Transfer case fluid change is simple — drain plug on the bottom, fill plug on the side. Fill with ATF+4 (NP231, NP241) or the specified fluid for your unit. Cost: under $20.
For leaking output seals, the repair is more involved but manageable: disconnect the driveshaft, remove the output flange, pry out the old seal, drive in the new one. Seal kits run $10–$25.
4. Rust (Frame, Rockers, Tub)
Pre-2018 Wranglers are known for frame rust, especially in salt-belt states. The steel frame can develop serious corrosion under the body, in the rockers, and on the floor tub.

5. 3.8L Engine Issues (JK 2007–2011)
Early JK Wranglers came with the 3.8L V6, which has a reputation for:

- Intake manifold leaks
- Valve cover gasket leaks
