Shops love to use "shocks and struts" as a blanket term for suspension work, and it leads to a lot of confusion — especially when your estimate says "rear shocks" and you're not sure what you're paying for. Here's a clear breakdown of what each does, how to identify which your vehicle has, and how to know when they need replacing.

A shock absorber is a simple device: a hydraulic cylinder filled with oil and nitrogen gas that controls how fast the suspension can move. When your wheel hits a bump, the spring compresses and then rebounds. The shock absorber dampens that rebound — it prevents the wheel from bouncing back up uncontrolled and causing the car to oscillate.
Shocks are suspension dampers only. They don't support the weight of the vehicle — that's the spring's job.
Vehicles with a traditional suspension design (common on trucks, rear-wheel-drive cars, and the rear axles of many front-wheel-drive cars) often use separate springs and shock absorbers. The shock bolts between the axle/control arm and the vehicle body.
Struts (MacPherson Struts)
A strut does everything a shock absorber does, plus more. A MacPherson strut assembly integrates the shock absorber, the spring, and the upper mount into a single structural component — and it also serves as the upper pivot point for the steering knuckle.
Because the strut is a structural component (part of the steering and suspension geometry), a bad strut affects not just ride quality but also handling, steering, and alignment.
Struts are both a damper and a structural suspension component. Most front-wheel-drive vehicles use struts on the front axle. Many vehicles use struts on the rear as well.
How to Tell Which Your Vehicle Has
The easiest way: look at your front wheel from the front of the car.
- If you see a coil spring wrapped around a cylindrical shock absorber at the top of the suspension assembly, that's a strut.
- If you see a coil spring that's separate from the shock absorber, it's a traditional shock-and-spring setup.
Your owner's manual or an online search for your year/make/model will confirm.
Symptoms of Worn Shocks or Struts
Ride quality symptoms:
- Excessive bouncing or floating over bumps (the car doesn't settle quickly)
- Bottom-out sensations on dips or speedbumps
- Nose-diving when braking
- Body lean/roll in corners significantly worse than when the car was new
Handling and safety symptoms:
- Longer stopping distances (worn shocks reduce tire-to-road contact)
- Wandering or vague steering (especially with worn struts)
- Hydroplaning more easily on wet roads
- Uneven tire wear — scalloping or cupping pattern across the tread
Visual inspection:
- Shiny, oily wetness on the outside of the shock or strut body — this is the hydraulic oil seeping out, which means the unit is losing its damping ability
- Dents or damage to the housing from road debris
How Often to Replace Them
There's no single fixed interval — it depends on driving conditions and vehicle type. General guidance:
- 50,000–100,000 miles is when most OEM shocks and struts begin showing significant wear on normal road conditions
- Earlier if: you drive frequently on rough roads, go off-road occasionally, or if the ride quality/handling has noticeably degraded
- Replace in pairs (both fronts or both rears together) to maintain balanced handling
Can You Replace Them Yourself?
Shocks (non-strut): Often very DIY-friendly. The shock typically has two mounting bolts — one at the top, one at the bottom. Remove both, swap the shock, reinstall. Access varies by vehicle.
Struts: More involved. The strut assembly must be compressed with a spring compressor tool to transfer the spring and mount from the old strut to the new one — this is a critical safety step. A spring under compression stores enormous energy; if it releases unexpectedly, it can cause serious injury. Spring compressor rental is available at most auto parts stores, but this job requires confidence and attention to procedure.
Pre-assembled "quick-strut" assemblies are available for many vehicles — they come with the new strut, spring, and mount already assembled, eliminating the need for a spring compressor. They cost more than a bare strut but simplify the job significantly.
