Summer Car Prep: 10 Things to Check Before Hot Weather Hits
Summer doesn't just mean road trips and beach parking. It means elevated under-hood temperatures, higher tire pressures, AC systems running flat out, and cooling systems pushed to their limits. The same car that cruises through winter without complaint can leave you stranded on the side of the highway in July.
Run through this 10-point checklist before summer heat arrives. Most of these checks take less than 10 minutes and cost nothing.

Your cooling system is your car's primary defense against overheating. Before summer:
Check coolant level: With the engine cold, inspect the overflow reservoir level. It should be between the MIN and MAX lines. If it's low, top off with the correct coolant spec for your vehicle (don't mix types).
Check coolant condition: Pull the radiator cap (cold engine only). Coolant should be green, orange, or blue depending on type — not brown or rusty. Brown coolant is contaminated and needs a full flush.
Inspect hoses: Squeeze the upper and lower radiator hoses. They should feel firm but pliable — not rock hard, cracked, or mushy. A mushy hose is close to failing.
Check for leaks: With the engine at operating temperature, look for puddles under the car or steam from under the hood. Even small coolant leaks worsen quickly in summer heat.
2. Radiator and Fan Operation
An overheating car in summer is usually a cooling system problem, not an engine problem.
Check the radiator: Look for bugs, debris, and bent fins in the radiator core. Use a garden hose (low pressure) to rinse debris from the outside of the radiator.
Verify the electric fan kicks on: With the AC running, the electric radiator fan should be spinning. If it doesn't come on with the AC on, you have a fan relay or motor issue — diagnose before summer.
Belt-driven fan: On older vehicles with a mechanical fan, check the fan clutch. With the engine off (and cold), grab the fan blade and try to rock it back and forth. Excessive play indicates a worn fan clutch.
3. AC System — Basic Check
You don't need a manifold gauge set to do a basic AC check.
Run the AC on max: Start the car, max out the AC, and let it run for 5 minutes. With a thermometer (or even your hand), check the outlet temperature at the center vents. It should be blowing 40–50°F on a mild day.
Look for signs of low refrigerant: Weak cooling at idle but better at highway speeds, or the AC blowing cold then warm intermittently, often indicates low refrigerant.
Note: Recharging AC refrigerant is doable at home with a DIY refrigerant can (R-134a for most pre-2021 vehicles, R-1234yf for newer ones). Follow the gauge carefully — overcharging is worse than undercharging.
4. Tire Pressure
Tire pressure increases approximately 1 PSI for every 10°F rise in ambient temperature. If your tires were at 32 PSI in 40°F weather, they'll be at 36 PSI when it's 80°F. Overinflated tires reduce contact patch, increase wear in the center of the tread, and reduce wet traction.
Check tire pressure on cold tires (driven less than a mile). Inflate to the spec on the door placard — not the number on the tire sidewall, which is the max pressure. Adjust seasonally.
5. Brakes — Check for Fade Risk
Brake fade happens when brake fluid boils from repeated heavy use — like descending a mountain, towing, or driving aggressively on a track day. Overheated brakes lose stopping power dramatically and quickly.
Check brake fluid condition: Brake fluid absorbs moisture over time, which lowers its boiling point. Dark, murky brake fluid is a sign it needs replacement. Fresh DOT 3/4 fluid is nearly clear or light yellow.
Check pad thickness: Before long summer road trips, verify you have adequate pad material. If you're below 3mm, replace before the trip.
6. Battery Load Test
Summer heat accelerates battery degradation as badly as winter cold — it's just less obvious. Heat evaporates the electrolyte inside lead-acid batteries and increases internal resistance.
Any battery over 3–4 years old should be load-tested before summer. Most auto parts stores do this free. A battery that passes a simple voltage test (12.6V) can still fail under load.
If the battery is marginal, replace it before it leaves you stranded in a 100°F parking lot.
7. Engine Oil — Verify Level and Condition
Heat thins oil. If your engine is burning any oil (which many high-mileage engines do), consumption accelerates in summer. Running 1+ quart low in summer causes real damage.
Check the oil level on the dipstick when the engine has been off for at least 5 minutes. Check the condition — pull the dipstick and look at the oil on a white shop towel. It should be amber or light brown. Black, gritty oil needs a change.
8. Windshield Washer Fluid
In summer, washer fluid gets used heavily — dead bugs, road grime, sun glare. Don't run the washer reservoir dry; the pump can overheat and fail when run dry.
Fill the reservoir with summer-formula fluid that includes bug remover. Skip the heavily diluted cheap stuff — concentrated washer fluid ($3–$5) mixed with water works just as well for a fraction of the cost.
9. Wiper Blades
Summer UV exposure degrades rubber faster than anything else. A wiper blade that worked fine in spring will streak in the first summer rainstorm. Blade rubber should be soft and edge contact should be even.
Replace blades every 12 months or when streaking appears. Basic Bosch or Rain-X blades cost $15–$25 for a pair. Takes 5 minutes.
10. Emergency Kit Refresh
Before long summer trips, refresh your roadside emergency kit:
- Updated: Water (at least 2 liters in hot climates)
- Jumper cables or jump pack (battery failures spike in summer heat)
- Fix-a-Flat or portable compressor (summer heat + worn tires = blowout risk)
- Sunshade — if you break down in direct sun, having a windshield shade buys time
The 30-Minute Summer Prep Routine
The full checklist above takes about 30 minutes to run through at home. It costs almost nothing. The jobs that need attention (low coolant, worn brakes, weak battery) are cheap to fix before they become expensive emergencies.
A blowout on the freeway, an overheated engine, or a dead battery in a hot parking lot — all of those are preventable with an afternoon of prep.
