The sway bar (also called an anti-roll bar or stabilizer bar) is a metal rod that connects the left and right sides of your suspension. When you corner, it resists body roll by transferring force from the compressing side to the extending side.
Sway bar links are the connectors between the sway bar end and the suspension component (usually the lower control arm or strut). They're small, they're under constant stress, and they wear out.
Inside each link is one or two ball-and-socket joints with rubber or polyurethane bushings. When those bushings crack, tear, or the ball joint loosens — you hear it.
How to Diagnose a Bad Sway Bar Link
The Bounce Test
Push down firmly on the corner of the vehicle directly over the wheel you suspect. Listen for a clunk as the suspension moves. A bad sway bar link usually clunks on both compression and rebound.
Visual Inspection
With the vehicle on jack stands and the wheel hanging free:
- Follow the sway bar from the center of the vehicle toward each end
- The link connects the end of the sway bar to the control arm or strut body
- Look for torn, cracked, or missing rubber boots on the ball joints
- Grab the link and try to wiggle it — any looseness is a problem
- Look for physical damage: bent links, cracked metal
The Wiggle Test
Grab the sway bar link firmly and try to move it side to side and up and down with the wheel loaded (on the ground). There should be zero play. Any slop means the joint is worn.

- Socket set (usually 17mm and 19mm for link hardware)
- Combination wrench (for holding the ball stud while loosening the nut)
- Torque wrench
- Penetrating oil
- Anti-seize compound (optional but recommended)

Most auto parts stores stock links for common vehicles. Buy OEM-spec quality — Moog, Dorman, and ACDelco are reliable brands. Avoid the cheapest house-brand options on this part; the ball joint quality difference is noticeable.
Step-by-Step: Sway Bar Link Replacement
Step 1: Raise and Support the Vehicle
Raise the vehicle on a floor jack and place it on jack stands. You don't need to remove the wheel, but access is much easier with the wheel off. If the joint is particularly tight or corroded, pull the wheel.
Soak the upper and lower link nuts with penetrating oil and wait at least 10 minutes.
Step 2: Break Loose the Upper Nut
The upper nut connects the link to the sway bar end. Use a socket on the nut and a combination wrench on the flat section of the ball stud (most links have a hex or torx section to hold the stud while you turn the nut).
If the stud spins freely as you try to loosen the nut, you need to use the wrench to hold the stud while breaking the nut loose. This is the most frustrating part of this job — the stud spins the moment the nut gets tight.
If the stud won't hold and keeps spinning: use an impact wrench. The sudden impact breaks the nut free before the stud can spin.
Step 3: Remove the Lower Nut
The lower nut connects the link to the control arm or strut. Same process — socket on nut, wrench on flat of stud.
Once both nuts are off, the link drops free.
Step 4: Compare the New Link
Hold the new link next to the old one. Length should match. If the new link is adjustable in length, set it to match the original. Some vehicles are sensitive to exact link length — check fitment guides before installing.
Step 5: Install the New Link
Thread both nuts by hand first. Don't start either one with a tool until both are hand-tight — this prevents cross-threading.
Tighten the upper and lower nuts to specification. Typical torque:
- Front sway bar link nuts: 40–65 ft-lbs on most vehicles
- Rear sway bar link nuts: 30–50 ft-lbs on most vehicles
Check your vehicle's service manual or a model-specific guide for exact specs. Undertightening lets the joint spin; overtightening crushes the bushing faster.
Step 6: Repeat on the Other Side
Do the second link while you have everything out. Doing only one side is false economy — if one is worn, the other side is close behind.
Step 7: Reinstall Wheel, Lower, Test
Torque lug nuts to spec, lower the vehicle, and take it over a few speed bumps. The clunk should be gone.
Sway Bar End Link vs. Sway Bar Bushing
Two separate components can cause similar symptoms. If you replaced the links and still have a clunk:
Sway bar bushings — the brackets that hold the sway bar to the vehicle frame at the center. These rubber bushings crack and allow the bar to knock against the bracket. The fix is a bracket-off bushing swap — a 20-minute job.
How to tell the difference: A worn sway bar link clunks most on single-corner impacts (hitting one wheel). Worn center bushings tend to produce a looser, lower-pitch clunk felt throughout the chassis, especially in corners.
Handling Impact of Worn Sway Bar Links
Worn links allow the sway bar to disconnect from the suspension, effectively giving you a vehicle without anti-roll control. On a light vehicle this is mostly uncomfortable. On a tall SUV or truck it's a stability hazard. Fix this before it gets worse.
