How to Read Tire Wear Patterns (And What They Mean)
Your tires are telling you something. Not with a warning light — just with wear. Where a tire wears, how fast it wears, and whether it wears evenly reveals exactly what's happening with your alignment, inflation pressure, and suspension. Most drivers glance at a tire, see it's not flat, and move on. But spending thirty seconds looking at the wear surface before a rotation can catch problems that will destroy the new tire you just bought in the same way the old one wore out.

The center tread is wearing faster than the outer edges.
Cause: Overinflation
When tire pressure is too high, the tire bulges in the middle and the center tread bears most of the contact patch load. The edges barely touch the road.
Fix: Check and correct tire pressure to the vehicle specification (found on the door jamb sticker, NOT the tire sidewall — the sidewall shows maximum pressure). See How to Check Tire Pressure the Right Way.
Edge Wear (Both Outer Edges Wearing Faster)
Both shoulder edges are wearing down while the center tread is still good.
Cause: Underinflation
An underinflated tire's sidewalls flex excessively, causing the shoulders to bear disproportionate load while the center of the tread arches off the road surface.
Fix: Same as above — correct tire pressure. Note that edge wear from underinflation is much more common than center wear, because most people run slightly low pressure rather than slightly high.
One-Sided Wear (Single Edge Wearing Faster)
Only the inner edge or outer edge of the tire is worn down, while the other side looks nearly new.
Cause: Alignment — specifically camber
Camber is the tilt of the wheel relative to vertical. Negative camber (top of the tire tilts inward) causes inner edge wear; positive camber (top tilts outward) causes outer edge wear.

Feathering or Sawtooth Wear
When you run your hand across the tread blocks, the edges feel sharp on one side and rounded on the other — like the steps of a staircase.
Cause: Toe misalignment
Toe refers to whether the fronts of the tires point inward (toe-in) or outward (toe-out) relative to the vehicle centerline. When toe is off, tires scrub sideways as they roll forward, wearing a sawtooth pattern into the tread blocks.
Fix: Wheel alignment, specifically toe adjustment. This is one of the most common alignment issues and the most destructive to tires.
Cupping or Scalloping (Dips and High Spots Around the Circumference)
Alternating high and low spots around the tread surface, like scallops — the wear isn't uniform as you rotate the tire, but wavy.
Cause: Worn shocks or struts, or wheel imbalance
A worn shock absorber allows the wheel to bounce instead of staying planted on the road. Each impact takes a bite out of the tire unevenly. Severe wheel imbalance can cause similar scalloping.
Fix: Inspect struts/shocks for leaking fluid or excessive bounce (push down on a corner — it should rebound once and stop). Also check wheel balance. If you see cupping on tires that were recently balanced, the suspension is the culprit.
Diagonal Wear (Patches at an Angle)
Diagonal scuffs or wear patches across the tread.
Cause: Usually a combination — alignment and suspension issues together
Diagonal wear often indicates both a toe/camber problem and worn suspension components (bushings, control arms) that allow the alignment to shift dynamically while driving. It's harder to fix with alignment alone because the suspension geometry changes under load.
Fix: Inspect suspension components for worn bushings and loose joints before paying for alignment. Aligning a worn suspension is temporary — it shifts back as soon as you hit a bump.
Flat Spots
A localized flat area on the tire tread.
Cause: Skidding, locked-up brakes, or sitting stationary for extended time
If a vehicle without ABS locks up a wheel during hard braking, the stationary tire scrubs a flat spot on the road. Tires stored or parked in one position for months can also develop temporary flat spots that disappear once the tire warms up — or permanent ones if severe.
Fix: Flat spots from locked braking are permanent — the tire needs replacement. Temperature flat spots usually resolve within a few miles of driving.
How to Inspect Your Tires
- Check tread depth with a quarter (insert it into the groove — if you can see all of Washington's head, the tread is below 4/32" and getting low)
- Run your hand across all tread surfaces to feel for feathering, cupping, or uneven ridges
- Look at the inner edge — you often can't see this from outside the wheel well; check with a flashlight
- Compare wear side-to-side on both fronts and both rears
- Look for bubbles or bulges in the sidewall (replace immediately — this indicates internal structural damage)
