"Your alignment is off" and "your wheels need balancing" both come out of the shop, often together, and sound so similar that most drivers nod and pay for both without really understanding what either means. They're genuinely different services that fix different problems, caused by different things, with different symptoms. Knowing the difference lets you identify which one your car actually needs — and call out a shop that's recommending one when you need the other.

Wheel alignment is the adjustment of your suspension angles — the precise geometric relationship between your wheels, tires, and the vehicle frame. The main angles adjusted are:
Camber: Tilt of the wheel inward or outward viewed from the front. Incorrect camber causes one-sided tire wear.
Toe: Whether the fronts of the tires point slightly inward (toe-in) or outward (toe-out) viewed from above. Incorrect toe causes feathering wear and steering pull.
Caster: Forward or backward tilt of the steering axis viewed from the side. Affects straight-line stability and steering return. Usually not adjustable on all vehicles.
Alignment is done on a specialized rack using sensors attached to each wheel that measure angles to within fractions of a degree. The technician adjusts tie rods (for toe), eccentric bolts, or camber plates until all angles meet factory spec.
What Causes Alignment to Go Off
- Hitting a pothole or curb hard
- Minor collision
- Normal wear of suspension bushings and ball joints (the geometry shifts as components wear)
- Lowering or lifting the vehicle
Alignment doesn't drift on its own without cause on a well-maintained vehicle — but it absolutely does shift when bushings wear or you hit something significant.
Symptoms of Bad Alignment
- Car pulls consistently to one side when you let go of the wheel on a straight, level road
- Steering wheel is off-center (turned slightly left or right) while driving straight
- Uneven or rapid tire wear — especially inner or outer edge wear, or feathering
- Car feels "loose" or wanders slightly when driving straight
What Wheel Balancing Is
Wheel balancing corrects mass imbalance in the tire-and-wheel assembly. Tires and wheels are never perfectly uniform — there are small variations in density and weight distribution around the circumference. When the heavy spot rotates, centrifugal force creates a wobble at the axle.
A balancing machine spins the wheel-and-tire assembly at road speed and measures where weight concentrations are. The technician attaches small lead weights to the rim to counteract the imbalance.
What Causes Imbalance
- Normal manufacturing variation in tires and wheels (why all new tires need balancing)
- Losing a wheel weight (they fall off occasionally, especially the stick-on type)
- Uneven tire wear over time
- Bent or slightly damaged rim
Symptoms of Wheel Imbalance
- Vibration through the steering wheel at specific speeds — typically 50–70 mph, then smoother at higher speeds
- Vibration in the seat or floorboard (rear imbalance)
- Vibration gets worse then better as you accelerate through a speed range
- No pull, no wander — just vibration at a particular speed
The speed-specific nature of imbalance vibration is the key diagnostic clue. Alignment problems cause consistent pull and steering wander at all speeds. Balance problems cause vibration at a specific speed range.

When to Do Each
Balance every new tire installation and any time you have vibration symptoms. Also re-check when you lose a wheel weight (you'll notice by the sudden appearance of vibration).
Align after hitting a significant pothole or curb, after any front-end or steering repair (new tie rods, struts, ball joints), when you see uneven tire wear, or roughly every 2–3 years on a daily driver. Also align whenever you install new tires to get maximum life from them.

Do You Need Both?
Often yes — they're frequently done together because both involve the wheels and tires. But you shouldn't be sold balancing every time you get alignment (or vice versa) without a clear symptom. If you have no vibration, you don't need balancing. If you're not pulling and have even tire wear, you don't need alignment.
