The reality: some alignment adjustments are DIY-friendly, others genuinely require shop equipment, and many alignment problems can be caught early with a $0 inspection you do in your driveway. What a Wheel Alignment Actually Adjusts

A full alignment measures and adjusts three angles:

Toe: The most commonly adjusted angle — whether the fronts of the tires point inward (toe-in) or outward (toe-out) relative to each other. Incorrect toe causes rapid, feathered tire wear and steering pull.

Camber: Whether the top of the tire leans inward (negative camber) or outward (positive camber) when viewed from the front. Typically requires adjustment only after suspension component replacement or a vehicle that's visibly leaning.

Caster: The angle of the steering axis, viewed from the side. Affects steering feel and straight-line stability. Usually non-adjustable on modern vehicles without aftermarket parts.

On most modern vehicles, toe is the only angle regularly adjusted. Camber is often fixed by the suspension geometry, or adjustable only through camber bolts or plates.


Pre-Alignment Checks You Should Do First (Free)

Before paying for an alignment, inspect the components that affect alignment angles. If worn parts are the cause of misalignment, an alignment before fixing them is wasted money.

Check list:

  • Tire pressure: Uneven pressure mimics alignment problems. Check and equalize all four tires first.
  • Tire wear pattern: Feathering on one edge = toe problem. Camber wear affects the inner or outer edge consistently.
  • Tie rod ends: Grab the front wheel at 9 and 3 o'clock and shake. Any movement in the tie rod joints = worn ends.
  • Ball joints: Grab the wheel at 12 and 6 o'clock and shake. Vertical play = worn ball joints. Fix before aligning.
  • Control arm bushings: Look for cracked or collapsed rubber bushings in the front suspension. Worn bushings allow alignment to shift and can prevent alignment from holding.
  • Struts/shocks: A leaking or blown strut changes ride height and throws off all three alignment angles.

If you find worn components, fix them first. Then get the alignment.


What You Can Adjust DIY

Toe Adjustment (Front)

Toe is adjusted by threading the tie rod ends in or out on the tie rod shaft. This changes the effective length of the tie rod and pivots the wheel inward or outward.

DIY string method:

  1. Inflate all tires to correct pressure
  2. Set up string lines along both sides of the car at wheel center height (parallel to the car's centerline)
  3. Measure the gap between the string and the front edge of both front wheels, then the rear edge of both front wheels
  4. Toe-in: rear gap is larger than front gap. Toe-out: front gap is larger.
  5. Adjust tie rod ends in equal amounts on each side to equalize and set correct toe (typically 0 to +0.1° for most passenger cars — check your service manual)

This method won't get you to 0.05° accuracy, but it gets you close enough to prevent rapid tire wear between professional alignments.

Camber Shims and Eccentric Bolts

Many vehicles have eccentric bolts or camber adjustment bolts in the lower control arm mounting position. These allow a range of +/- 1.5° camber adjustment without alignment equipment.

Camber adjustment plates (top mount spacers) are available for many vehicles with strut suspensions. These are bolt-in parts that provide adjustment range.


What Requires a Shop

  • Rear wheel alignment: Most DIYers don't have the reference points or equipment to measure and adjust rear alignment angles. Rear toe and camber on multi-link suspensions require a rack.
  • Precision front alignment: If you need wheel angles to within 0.1° (required after suspension component replacement), you need an alignment rack with computerized sensors.
  • Thrust angle check: Verifying that all four wheels track on the same centerline requires a 4-wheel alignment machine.
  • Caster adjustment: Nearly always requires aftermarket eccentric control arm bolts or replacement parts to change.

Pro Tips

  • Always align after suspension work. Any time you replace tie rods, ball joints, control arms, or struts, get a 4-wheel alignment. Skipping it wears tires fast and puts the car's handling in an unknown state.
  • Ask for the before/after printout. A legitimate alignment shop will show you the initial readings, the target specifications, and the final adjusted values. If they won't show you the printout, find another shop.
  • Track alignment with tire wear. Check your tires every oil change. Uneven wear developing within 5,000 miles of an alignment suggests something loose — not the alignment shop's error.
