What Is a Parasitic Draw?

A small amount of current drain when the car is off is normal. Every modern car keeps the clock, keyless entry receiver, and certain ECU memory alive — this is called "quiescent current" and typically runs 25–50 milliamps (mA).

A parasitic draw is abnormal current drain above that threshold. Even 150–200 mA sustained overnight (about the same as a small LED bulb) can kill a battery in 2–3 days.

Common Culprits

  • Trunk or glove box light staying on (stuck switch)
  • Aftermarket radio or amplifier with poor installation (always-hot power wire)
  • Aftermarket alarm system
  • Body Control Module (BCM) staying awake
  • Faulty door ajar switch
  • Parasitic draw from USB charger or 12V accessories left plugged in
  • Failing relay stuck in closed position

Tools You Need

  • Digital multimeter with milliamp (mA) range — or a dedicated DC clamp meter
  • Test leads
  • Fuse puller or needle-nose pliers
  • Your vehicle's fuse box diagram (in the owner's manual or inside the fuse box cover)

Step 1: Let the Car Sit

Modules need time to sleep after you shut the car off — sometimes 30–45 minutes. If you start the test immediately, you'll see high current that will self-resolve.

Shut everything off, lock the car, and wait at least 30 minutes before testing.


Step 2: Set Up the Amp Meter

  1. Open the hood
  2. Set your multimeter to the highest DC amp range (10A or 20A)
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable
  4. Connect the multimeter in series: red probe to the disconnected cable end, black probe to the negative battery terminal post
  5. The circuit is now: Battery → multimeter → car's electrical system

Critical: Do NOT open any door, turn on any light, or unlock the car during this test. Any event wakes sleeping modules and resets the measurement.

Read the current. If it's above 50 mA after 45 minutes, you have a draw.


Step 3: The Fuse Pull Method

With the multimeter still in series showing the parasitic draw:

  1. Go to the fuse box (usually under the hood and/or under the dash — there may be two)
  2. Pull one fuse at a time using a fuse puller
  3. Watch the multimeter reading
  4. When pulling a specific fuse causes the current to drop significantly, you've found the circuit with the draw
  5. Replace that fuse and investigate the circuit

Tip: Pull fuses in order so you don't lose track. Note which ones you've pulled.

Step 4: Once You Find the Circuit

Stuck interior light: Open every door, the trunk, and the glove box one at a time. Press each door switch manually to confirm it's returning the light to off. Replace the faulty switch ($10–$30).

Aftermarket radio: Check whether the installer used a constant +12V wire for the memory lead and the switched ignition wire. A radio that's always powered draws 50–300 mA even when off. Rewire the constant +12V to the correct slot.

BCM staying awake: Check for fault codes in the BCM. A stuck-open door ajar signal can keep the BCM active all night. Check door switches and body wiring.

Pro Tips

  • Switch to mA range once you've confirmed a draw exists. The 10A range on most meters only reads to 0.01A accuracy — you need the mA range to distinguish 30 mA from 80 mA.
  • Don't pull the airbag fuse. Some vehicles will set airbag fault codes if you pull that fuse with the key off.
