Step 1: Test the Battery

Step 4: Test for Bad Grounds — The Most Overlooked Problem

Most mysterious electrical problems are ground problems. A bad ground doesn't just affect one system — it affects every system that shares that ground path. Symptoms include:

  • Instruments reading erratically
  • Multiple unrelated warning lights on at once
  • Accessories that work sometimes and not others
  • Voltage readings that look fine but circuits that don't work
  • Strange behavior that gets better or worse with temperature

How to Test a Ground

  3. Turn on a load that uses that ground (lights, fan, etc.)

Expected: Less than 0.1V (100 mV) across any ground connection. More than 0.3V (300 mV) = bad ground. Over 0.5V = serious ground fault that will cause real symptoms.


Step 5: BCM / ECM — When Modules Are Involved

If battery, alternator, fuses, and grounds all test good and you still have problems:

Read fault codes. An OBD2 scanner that reads body/BCM codes (not just engine codes) will show network communication faults, module-specific faults, and bus errors that point directly to the problem module.

Common BCM symptoms:

  • Windows/locks that work intermittently
  • Interior lights with a mind of their own
  • Turn signals or brake lights behaving oddly
  • Keyless entry problems

Before condemning the BCM: Check ground integrity at the BCM connector (typically under the dash). A loose or corroded BCM ground causes behavior that looks exactly like a dead BCM — but the fix is a $5 ground cleaning rather than a $500 module.


Voltage Drop Test — The Most Powerful Diagnostic Tool

The voltage drop test works on any circuit in the car — not just grounds.

  1. Find a circuit that's not working correctly
  2. Put the meter in series across the section you're testing (not to ground)

  4. Any voltage reading = resistance in that path = a problem
