Step 4: Check Belt Tension
A slipping serpentine belt causes the alternator to spin below spec, producing low output even with a healthy unit.
- Locate the serpentine belt routing diagram (sticker under hood or owner's manual)
- Check for glazing, cracks, or fraying
- Deflection test: Push on the longest belt run with your thumb — proper tension allows no more than 1/2" of deflection
