Where Is My Fuse Box?

Modern vehicles have two or more fuse boxes:

  1. Under-hood fuse/relay box (PDC — Power Distribution Center): Located near the battery. Contains high-current fuses (30–150A maxi-fuses) and main relays for systems like the fuel pump, cooling fan, ABS, and starter.

  2. Interior fuse panel: Usually under the dashboard on the driver's side, or behind a kick panel. Contains lower-current blade fuses (5A–30A) for accessories, lights, windows, and infotainment.

  3. Some vehicles have a third box inside the cabin (under the rear seat or in the trunk) for rear entertainment systems, subwoofers, or hybrid battery management.

Always check your owner's manual for exact locations — many are hidden behind trim panels.


How to Read a Fuse Box Diagram

The fuse box cover has a diagram showing which fuse slot powers which circuit. Each slot is labeled with:

  • Number — the position in the box
  • Amp rating — 5A, 10A, 15A, 20A, 25A, 30A most common
  • Description — "Radio," "Wiper," "Power Windows," etc.

Never replace a fuse with a higher amp rating. If a 15A fuse keeps blowing, there's a short in the circuit — increasing the fuse rating risks fire.


How to Test a Fuse

Visual inspection:

Remove the fuse and hold it up to light. The wire bridge inside should be intact. A blown fuse has a visible break in the bridge.

Multimeter test (more reliable):

  1. Set multimeter to continuity mode or DC voltage
  2. Leave the fuse installed in the slot
  3. With the ignition on (or key in acc position for the circuit), probe both exposed test points on top of the fuse
  4. You should read battery voltage on both sides of a good fuse
  5. If one side reads 0V — the fuse is blown (even if it looks intact — sometimes the wire break is hard to see)

Understanding Relays

A relay is an electrically-controlled switch. A small control current (usually from the ECM or a switch) energizes an electromagnet coil inside the relay, which then closes a separate high-current circuit. This protects switches and wiring from carrying heavy loads directly.

SPST vs. SPDT

SPST (Single Pole, Single Throw): One input, one output. Either on or off. Most fuel pump relays and cooling fan relays are SPST.

  • Pins: 85 (coil ground), 86 (coil power), 30 (power in), 87 (power out when energized)

SPDT (Single Pole, Double Throw): One input, two outputs. Can switch between two circuits. Used in some HVAC, headlight switching, and horn circuits.

  • Pins: 85, 86, 30, 87 (closed when energized), 87a (closed when de-energized)

How to Test a Relay

Swap test (fastest): Find an identical relay in the same fuse box and swap them. If the dead circuit comes back to life, the original relay is bad.

Bench test (more accurate):

  1. Remove the relay from the box
  2. With a 12V power source and two jumper wires, apply 12V to pin 86 and ground pin 85
  3. You should hear a click as the coil energizes
  4. Test continuity between pins 30 and 87 — it should show continuity now (closed)
  5. Remove power — continuity between 30 and 87 should disappear

No click = bad coil. Click but no continuity = bad contacts.

Pro Tips

  • Stock spare relays. Buy 2–3 standard 30A SPST relays from any auto parts store. They're $5–$10 each and cover 80% of relay failures on any vehicle.
  • Check the fuse box for corrosion. In climates with road salt, the fuse box itself can corrode internally. Dielectric grease on fuse contacts prevents this.
  • After a blown fuse, find the cause. A fuse blew for a reason — an overloaded circuit, a short to ground, or a failing component. Replace the component, not just the fuse.
