What to Do When Your Car Overheats Right Now

If the temperature gauge is in the red, or you see steam from under the hood:

  1. Turn off the AC immediately — reduces engine load
  2. Turn the heater on full blast — the heater core acts as a second radiator and can help dissipate heat
  3. Pull over safely and shut the engine off — do not keep driving
  4. Wait at least 30 minutes before opening the hood — hot coolant is under pressure
  5. Never open the radiator cap when the engine is hot — scalding coolant can spray

Only check for damage and coolant level once the engine is fully cool.


Common Causes of Engine Overheating

1. Low Coolant Level

The most common cause. If coolant is low, there's not enough fluid to transfer heat away from the engine.

Check: Look at the overflow reservoir level (not the radiator cap). If it's below MIN, add a 50/50 mix of the correct coolant type and distilled water.

If it keeps dropping: You have a leak (external) or the coolant is burning off (internal — head gasket). Find the source.


2. Coolant Leak

Coolant can leak externally (visible drips, puddles under the car) or internally (burned through the combustion chamber — no visible drip, but the coolant disappears and oil may look milky).

External leak locations:

  • Radiator hoses (squeeze them cold — soft, mushy, or cracking hoses need replacement)
  • Radiator itself (look for white deposits or wet spots)
  • Water pump weep hole (a deliberate drainage point that signals a failing water pump)
  • Heater core (sweet smell inside the cabin, foggy windshield, or wet carpet under the dash)

Internal leak signs:

  • Coolant disappears with no visible drip
  • White smoke from the exhaust (steam, sweet smell)
  • Milky or foamy oil on the dipstick
  • Engine overheats despite correct coolant level

Internal leaks typically mean a head gasket failure — significant repair that requires cylinder head work.


3. Thermostat Failure

The thermostat regulates coolant flow based on engine temperature. A thermostat stuck closed prevents coolant from circulating — the engine heats rapidly. A thermostat stuck open causes the engine to run too cool.

Diagnosis: If the engine overheats quickly after starting and the upper radiator hose stays cold, the thermostat may be stuck closed (coolant isn't reaching the radiator).

Fix: Thermostat replacement is a moderate DIY job on most vehicles — accessible in 30–60 minutes and costs $15–$30 for the part.


4. Failed Water Pump

The water pump circulates coolant through the system. When it fails (impeller erosion, seal failure, bearing failure), coolant circulation stops — or slows enough that overheating occurs under load.

Signs: Coolant leak from the weep hole, grinding or whining from the front of the engine, overheating under load but not at idle.

DIY difficulty: Moderate to hard depending on location — some water pumps are external (accessible), others are timing belt-driven (internal, requires timing system disassembly).


5. Radiator Problems

A clogged, corroded, or damaged radiator can't cool the coolant adequately. Bugs, debris, and bent fins reduce airflow through the radiator core. Internal scale and rust deposits reduce heat transfer.

Check: Look at the front of the radiator for bent or blocked fins. Inspect for corrosion or leaks. A radiator flush can remove mild internal buildup.


6. Cooling Fan Failure

Electric cooling fans are supposed to kick on when the engine reaches operating temperature. If the fan fails, the engine can overheat at low speeds or idle — but may stay cool at highway speed (where airflow through the radiator is sufficient without the fan).

Diagnosis: If the car overheats in traffic or at idle but not on the highway, suspect the cooling fan. Check whether the fan runs when the AC is on (the condenser fan usually runs whenever AC is active).


Steps After Diagnosing

  1. Fix the root cause — don't just refill the coolant and hope
  2. Flush the cooling system if the coolant is old or contaminated
  3. Check for head gasket damage if the car has overheated severely (milky oil, white exhaust smoke)
  4. Inspect all hoses and the thermostat while you're in there
