That clicking sound when you turn a corner — the one that's been nagging you for weeks — almost certainly means a failing CV (constant velocity) axle. How to Diagnose a Bad CV Axle

A CV axle transfers power from the transmission or differential to the wheel hub. It has rubber boots that keep grease in and dirt out. When a boot tears, the grease escapes, the joint runs dry, and the metal wears fast.

Warning signs:

  • Clicking or popping when turning — especially at low speed. This is the most reliable indicator of a worn outer CV joint.
  • Clunking when accelerating from a stop — points to an inner joint failure.
  • Grease spatter inside the wheel well — visible evidence of a torn boot.
  • Vibration at highway speed — less common, but a worn axle can cause driveline vibration.

Do a quick visual: look at the inner wheel well on each side. A torn CV boot will fling black grease across the surrounding components. If you see it, the boot has been compromised long enough that replacement (not just re-booting) is likely the right move.


Tools You'll Need

  • Floor jack and jack stands (never work under a car on a jack alone)
  • Breaker bar or impact wrench
  • 30–36 mm socket for the axle nut (size is vehicle-specific — look it up)
  • Torque wrench
  • Pry bar or large flathead screwdriver
  • Ball-peen hammer or dead-blow mallet
  • Penetrating oil (apply the day before if possible)
  • New CV axle (buy reman or OEM — match exact year/make/model/drivetrain)
  • New axle nut (one-time-use on most vehicles)

Step-by-Step CV Axle Replacement

1. Loosen the Axle Nut First

The axle nut is torqued to 150–200 ft-lbs depending on the vehicle. Break it loose before lifting the car — while the tire is still on the ground. Apply penetrating oil to the nut threads the night before if it looks corroded.

2. Lift and Support the Vehicle

Lift the vehicle from the manufacturer's jacking point, place jack stands under the frame, and lower the car onto the stands. Remove the wheel.

3. Disconnect the Lower Ball Joint or Control Arm

On most FWD vehicles you need to create enough downward movement of the hub to pull the outer CV joint free. Disconnect the lower ball joint pinch bolt, or unbolt the strut from the knuckle — this varies by suspension design. Reference a vehicle-specific service guide before this step.

4. Pull the Outer End Free

With the lower suspension disconnected, pull the hub/knuckle outward to create clearance and slide the outer CV end out of the hub. The splines are a press fit — it may require a firm pull or a few taps with a mallet.

5. Remove the Inner End from the Transmission

Insert a pry bar between the inner CV housing and the transmission case (on the side closest to the center of the car). Apply a firm, controlled pop — the internal snap ring is what you're releasing. Don't pry against the transmission case face. The axle will drop free.

6. Install the New Axle

Slide the inner end into the transmission first — push until you feel the snap ring seat (you'll hear or feel a click). Then slide the outer splined end into the hub. Reconnect the suspension, thread on a new axle nut hand-tight.

7. Torque and Reinstall

Lower the wheel back to the ground, then torque the axle nut to spec. Reinstall the wheel, torque lug nuts to spec, and take a slow test drive including several slow-speed turns.


Common Mistakes

  • Reusing the axle nut — many are one-time-use stretch nuts. Always replace it.
  • Not seating the inner snap ring — the axle will pull out under load. Verify it's seated before dropping the suspension.
  • Wrong part number — a slight drivetrain variation (AWD vs. FWD, engine size, transmission type) can mean the wrong spline count. Confirm fitment before starting.
  • Skipping penetrating oil — a seized axle nut or ball joint bolt can turn a 3-hour job into an all-day nightmare.
