Every year, people are killed or seriously injured by vehicles that fall off improperly positioned jacks or jack stands. This is not a dramatic overstatement — it's a consistent category of home mechanic fatality, and it happens to experienced people as well as beginners. A car can fall off a jack silently, without warning, and with lethal force.

This guide exists because safety fundamentals are often buried in the middle of "how to do X repair" guides that assume you already know this. You need to know it before anything else.

Understanding the Equipment

Floor jack: A hydraulic device used to lift the vehicle. A floor jack is not a support device — it's a lifting device. Never rely on a floor jack alone to support a vehicle while you work under it. Hydraulic seals can fail. Valves can creep. The vehicle will come down.

Jack stands: Rigid mechanical stands used to support the vehicle after it's been lifted. These are your actual safety device. They do not rely on hydraulics and cannot slowly lower.

Vehicle jack / scissor jack: The small tool that comes with your spare tire kit. For emergencies by the road only — NOT for DIY repairs. Do not use it as your primary jack.


Before You Start: Jacking Points

Every vehicle has designated jacking points — reinforced areas of the frame or subframe designed to accept the load of a jack. Using the wrong location can:

  • Damage the vehicle's body, rocker panels, or undercarriage components
  • Cause the vehicle to shift or fall because the lift point isn't structurally capable of holding the load

Find your jacking points:

  • Owner's manual — there's almost always a jacking section with diagrams
  • Vehicle-specific service guide
  • Common locations: front subframe behind the front wheels, rear axle or subframe ahead of rear wheels, reinforced sections of the pinch weld (requires a pinch weld adapter on your floor jack saddle to avoid crushing the flange)

On many modern unibody vehicles, the pinch weld is the designated jack point. Buy rubber pinch weld adapters — $15–$25 — that fit the jack saddle and protect the flange.


Jack Stand Placement

Jack stands go under the vehicle at a different location from where you jacked it up — specifically at points designed to carry the vehicle's weight long-term. Common locations:

  • Frame rails (solid steel frame vehicles — most trucks and older cars)
  • Subframe mounting points (many FWD and modern vehicles)
  • Axle housing (for rear axle work on solid-axle vehicles)

Never place a jack stand under:

  • The oil pan
  • The transmission pan
  • Brake lines or fuel lines
  • Sheet metal or plastic underbody panels

Step-by-Step Safe Lifting Procedure

1. Work on Firm, Level Ground

Never lift a vehicle on gravel, grass, loose dirt, or a significant slope. A flat concrete floor is ideal. Asphalt is acceptable.

2. Engage the Parking Brake and Chock the Wheels

Before lifting any wheel off the ground, set the parking brake firmly. Place wheel chocks (or substantial blocks of wood) against the wheels that will remain on the ground — diagonally opposite to the side being lifted.

3. Position the Floor Jack

Position the jack saddle under the designated jacking point. Center it carefully — an off-center saddle can let the vehicle slip sideways as it rises.

4. Raise the Vehicle Slowly

Pump the jack handle to raise the vehicle. Go slowly and watch the jacking point to confirm the saddle stays centered. Raise the vehicle until the tire is clear of the ground with enough height to position the jack stand.

5. Position and Set the Jack Stands

Slide the jack stands into position under the frame or subframe support points. Extend the stand to the appropriate height, engage the locking mechanism (a pin through the collar is the most common), and lower the vehicle slowly onto the stands.

The vehicle should rest on the jack stands — not on the floor jack. Lower the floor jack until it's barely contacting the jacking point or clear of the vehicle entirely.

6. Test Before Getting Under

Push the vehicle firmly from multiple directions. It should not move. If there's any wobble or instability, do not get under the vehicle — re-lift and reposition.

7. Never Trust the Jack Alone

Keep the floor jack positioned near the jacking point as a backup — but the stands are your primary support. If you need to get under the vehicle for any reason, both stands must be in place.


Common Mistakes That Kill People

  • Working under a vehicle supported only by the floor jack — the most common fatal mistake
  • Using a scissor/bottle jack for extended work — scissor jacks are designed for one emergency use, not DIY maintenance
  • Placing stands on sheet metal or plastic — the stand will punch through and the vehicle falls
  • Not chocking the wheels — a vehicle on unlocked wheels can roll off stands on completely flat ground
  • Skipping the shake test — always confirm stability before going under
