Battery Basics: Types and What They Mean for Testing

All 12V automotive batteries use lead-acid chemistry, but the internal construction varies:

  • Flooded (conventional): Lead plates submerged in liquid electrolyte — the most common type, lowest cost, standard replacement for most vehicles
  • AGM (Absorbent Glass Mat): Electrolyte absorbed in glass mat separators — sealed, spill-proof, handles repeated charge/discharge cycles — required on vehicles with start-stop systems (BMW, Mercedes, Audi, many newer domestic vehicles)
  • EFB (Enhanced Flooded Battery): An upgraded flooded design used on some European start-stop vehicles — performance is between conventional and AGM

Critical: If your vehicle came equipped with an AGM battery, you must replace it with AGM. Installing a conventional flooded battery in an AGM application will cause premature failure and may damage the charging system. Check the battery label — it will say AGM, EFB, or Flooded.


Understanding CCA (Cold Cranking Amps)

CCA is the most important battery rating — it measures how much current the battery can deliver at 0°F for 30 seconds while maintaining at least 7.2V. Higher CCA = more starting power in cold weather.

Typical CCA ranges:

  • Compact cars / 4-cylinder engines: 400–550 CCA
  • Midsize cars / V6 engines: 550–650 CCA
  • Full-size trucks / SUVs / V8 engines: 650–800 CCA
  • Diesel trucks: 800–1,000+ CCA (often dual batteries)

Temperature effect on CCA: Every 1°F below 32°F reduces available CCA by approximately 1%. A battery rated at 600 CCA at 0°F delivers only about 540 CCA at -10°F. Cold weather reveals marginal batteries that tested fine in summer.


Test 1: Multimeter Open-Circuit Voltage

This is the fastest basic check. A fully charged 12V battery should read:

How to take the reading: Let the vehicle sit for at least 2 hours after the last drive or charge (surface charge dissipates in that time). Set your multimeter to DC voltage, touch red to positive (+) terminal, black to negative (−) terminal.

Engine running check: With the engine running, measure at the battery terminals. You should read 13.5–14.7V. This confirms the alternator is charging. Below 13.2V suggests a charging system problem. Test 2: Load Test (The Real Test)

Open-circuit voltage tells you state of charge — it does not tell you if the battery can actually deliver current under load. A battery can read 12.6V at rest and fail completely when asked to start a cold engine.

Carbon pile load test (most accurate):

  1. Fully charge the battery first
  2. Apply a load equal to half the battery's CCA rating (a 600 CCA battery gets a 300A load)
  3. Hold for 15 seconds
  4. Read the voltage at the end of the 15-second load

Pass/fail:

  • Voltage stays at or above 9.6V at 70°F = battery passes
  • Voltage drops to 9.0V or below = battery has failed — replace it
  • If the battery is cold (below 32°F), the minimum acceptable voltage under load is lower — approximately 9.1V at 32°F, 8.5V at 0°F

Electronic load testers: Many auto parts stores use conductance-based electronic testers (Midtronics, Snap-on) that don't require a full charge first. AutoZone, O'Reilly, and Advance Auto Parts will test your battery free of charge in the parking lot.


Reading the Battery Date Code

Every battery has a date code — a sticker or stamp on the top or side that tells you when it was manufactured. Common formats:

  • Letter + number: A = January, B = February... L = December; the number is the year. B6 = February 2026.
  • 4-digit code: First digit is year, second two digits are week. 6104 = 2026, week 4.

A battery over 4–5 years old that is failing a load test should be replaced proactively. Most lead-acid batteries have a service life of 3–6 years depending on climate and usage.


DIY Battery Replacement Steps

  1. Disconnect the negative (black/−) terminal first, then positive
  2. Remove the hold-down bracket or clamp
  3. Lift the old battery out — they weigh 30–50 lbs
  4. Clean the terminal clamps with a wire brush and baking soda solution if there is corrosion
  5. Install the new battery, secure the hold-down
  6. Connect positive terminal first, then negative
  7. Apply anti-corrosion felt washers or dielectric grease to terminals

On modern vehicles with BMS (Battery Management System) — common on BMW, Mercedes, Audi, Volvo — you may need to register the new battery using an OBD2 scan tool with BMS reset capability.
