A complete tune-up covers:

  1. Spark plugs
  2. Engine air filter
  3. Fuel filter (if accessible/serviceable)
  4. PCV (Positive Crankcase Ventilation) valve
  5. Ignition wires or coil-on-plug boots (if applicable)
  6. Timing check (on older vehicles with distributor ignition)

Step 1: Spark Plugs

Spark plugs are the centerpiece of a tune-up. Worn plugs cause misfires, reduced fuel economy (up to 4 MPG), and hard starts.

What you need:

  • Correct replacement plugs (check owner's manual or RockAuto for application-specific plugs)
  • Torque wrench
  • 5/8" spark plug socket with rubber insert
  • Extension and socket wrench
  • Dielectric grease (for boots)

How to do it:

  1. Let the engine cool completely (30+ minutes after driving)
  2. Remove the ignition wire or COP coil from plug 1
  3. Use compressed air to blow debris from the plug well before removing
  4. Remove the old plug with plug socket + extension
  5. Check the gap on new plug vs. spec (usually 0.028"–0.060"; check your manual)
  6. Install new plug by hand first (avoid cross-threading)
  7. Torque to spec — typically 11–21 lb-ft depending on engine; see your shop manual
  8. Apply thin coat of dielectric grease to boot interior before reinstalling

Repeat for each cylinder. Do one at a time to avoid mixing up wires.

Cost: 4–8 iridium plugs ≈ $35–$80 depending on cylinder count and plug type. Shop labor: $100–$200.


Step 2: Engine Air Filter

A clogged air filter restricts airflow and reduces power and fuel economy.

How to do it:

  1. Locate the air box (usually connected to the throttle body via a large hose)
  2. Unclip or unscrew the lid — no tools required on most modern cars
  3. Pull out the old filter and inspect it (hold it up to light — you should see light through clean filter media)
  4. Drop in the new filter in the same orientation
  5. Resecure the lid

Cost: OEM paper filter: $12–$25. K&N reusable high-flow filter: $45–$65 (washable, 1-time purchase). Shop charges $45–$85 for the part + installation.


Step 3: Fuel Filter

Many modern vehicles have a non-serviceable in-tank fuel filter integrated with the fuel pump assembly. These don't require scheduled replacement.

On vehicles with an in-line fuel filter (most pre-2005 vehicles, some trucks), replacement is a tune-up staple:

  1. Relieve fuel system pressure (pull fuel pump fuse, run engine to stall, or use Schrader valve on fuel rail)
  2. Place shop towels under the filter
  3. Use fuel line disconnect tools to release quick-connect fittings (or remove banjo bolts on threaded connections)
  4. Note flow direction arrow on old filter — install new filter in same direction
  5. Reconnect lines; turn ignition to ON position (without cranking) 3x to repressurize fuel rail
  6. Check for leaks before starting

Cost: Inline fuel filter: $15–$35. Shop: $85–$140 with labor.


Step 4: PCV Valve

The PCV valve manages crankcase pressure. A stuck-closed valve causes oil consumption and sludge. A stuck-open valve causes rough idle and smoke.

How to do it:

  1. Locate the PCV valve — usually a cylindrical valve pressed into the valve cover, connected to a rubber hose
  2. Pull the hose off, then twist and pull the valve out
  3. Shake the old valve — you should hear the internal plunger rattle; if it doesn't, it's stuck
  4. Install new valve — press firmly until it seats
  5. Reconnect hose

Cost: PCV valve: $8–$20. Shop: $50–$80 with labor.


Step 5: Ignition Wires (Older Vehicles with Distributor)

On pre-2000 vehicles with distributor-based ignition, inspect plug wires for cracks, carbon tracking, and resistance (>25,000 ohms per foot = replacement time).

Replace wires one at a time to maintain correct firing order.

Step 6: Timing Check (Distributor Ignition Only)

On distributors with adjustable timing:

  1. Connect a timing light to cylinder 1 wire
  2. Check timing mark vs. spec (listed on underhood emissions label)
  3. Loosen distributor hold-down bolt and rotate distributor to adjust
  4. Retighten bolt and re-verify

Modern coil-on-plug ignition systems have no adjustable timing.
