Your temperature gauge climbs slowly to the red when it never did before. Or the opposite — the gauge sits way below normal and the heater barely gets warm even after 20 minutes of driving. Both symptoms point to the same small, inexpensive part: the thermostat. It costs $15–40 and takes about an hour to replace, but a lot of people spend hundreds at the shop on this one because they don't realize how straightforward it is.

Here's how to test it, remove it, and install a replacement.

What the Thermostat Does

The thermostat is a temperature-controlled valve in the cooling system. When the engine is cold, the thermostat stays closed — blocking coolant flow to the radiator so the engine warms up quickly. Once coolant reaches the correct temperature (usually 180–210°F depending on the car), the thermostat opens and allows hot coolant to flow to the radiator to be cooled.

Stuck closed: Coolant can't reach the radiator → engine overheats Stuck open: Coolant always flows to the radiator → engine never reaches operating temperature → poor fuel economy, weak heat from the heater, and long warm-up times


How to Test the Thermostat Without Removing It

Before you pull it, confirm the symptoms match a thermostat failure:

For a stuck-closed thermostat:

  • Engine overheats, but radiator and upper hose stay cool even when the gauge is high
  • When you open the radiator cap (cold engine only), coolant level looks fine but doesn't circulate when you warm it up

For a stuck-open thermostat:

  • Engine takes very long to warm up (more than 10 minutes in warm weather)
  • Heater output is weak — cool air even when fully set to hot
  • Temperature gauge sits at the first mark and doesn't rise further

You can also test a removed thermostat: drop it in a pot of water and heat it on the stove. It should open as the water approaches the rated temperature (stamped on the thermostat body) and close again as the water cools. If it stays closed or open regardless of temperature, replace it.


Tools and Parts You'll Need

  • Replacement thermostat (match the temperature rating and fit to your car — most auto parts stores look it up by VIN)
  • New thermostat gasket or O-ring (often included with the thermostat)
  • RTV silicone gasket maker (if your application uses a formed gasket)
  • Drain pan
  • Coolant (to top up after)
  • Screwdrivers, pliers, socket set
  • Plastic scraper
  • Torque wrench (helpful but not always critical)
  • Rags and nitrile gloves

Step 1: Find the Thermostat Housing

The thermostat typically lives where the upper radiator hose connects to the engine — follow the upper hose from the radiator back to the engine block, and you'll find the thermostat housing at the end. It's usually a small aluminum or plastic housing held on by 2–3 bolts.

On some engines (Honda, some FWD transverse engines) the thermostat is on the lower hose side. Check a service manual or search "[your car model] thermostat location" if you're not sure.


Step 2: Drain Coolant to Below the Thermostat Level

You don't need to drain the whole system — just enough that coolant won't gush out when you open the housing. Drain 1–2 quarts using the radiator petcock (see How to Flush Your Coolant System Yourself for drainage steps) until the level is below the housing.


Step 3: Remove the Housing and Thermostat

Disconnect the upper radiator hose from the housing (you may want to have a rag ready for drips). Remove the 2–3 bolts holding the housing to the engine. The housing should lift or pivot away — if it's stuck, a gentle pry with a flathead screwdriver is fine, but don't force it.

The thermostat sits in a pocket in the housing or engine block. Note its orientation before removing it — there's usually a specific way it goes in (a jiggle valve or small vent hole should face up).


Step 4: Clean the Mating Surfaces

Use a plastic scraper to remove the old gasket material from both the housing and the engine block face. Don't use metal scrapers on aluminum — you'll scratch the sealing surface and create new leak paths. Clean both surfaces until they're smooth and free of old sealant.


Step 5: Install the New Thermostat

Install the new thermostat with the correct orientation (jiggle valve up, or per the instructions included with the part). If your application uses an O-ring, seat it properly in its groove. If it uses a flat gasket, apply a thin, even bead of RTV sealant to one mating surface and press the gasket in place.

Reinstall the housing bolts and torque to spec (typically 8–12 Nm / 6–9 ft-lbs for smaller bolts on aluminum housings — check your service manual). Do not overtighten — you'll crack the housing.

Reconnect the upper hose and tighten the clamp.


Step 6: Refill and Bleed

Refill with the coolant/water mix. Start the engine and let it idle to operating temperature. Watch the temperature gauge climb to the normal operating range. When the thermostat opens, you'll often see the upper radiator hose suddenly get hot — that's normal and confirms the new thermostat is working.

Watch for air bubbles escaping from the fill neck and top up as needed. Check for leaks at the housing.
