Symptoms:
- Steering wheel play or looseness
- Clunking from the front when turning or hitting bumps
- Steering that feels vague or wanders on the highway

Shop check:
- Raise the front of the vehicle on jack stands
- Grab the tire at 9 and 3 o'clock and push/pull laterally
- Have a helper watch the tie rod end ball joint stud in the steering knuckle
- Any visible movement or play at the ball joint stud = worn outer tie rod end
- For inner tie rod ends: move the steering wheel lock-to-lock while watching the inner end where it connects to the rack — any visible knocking or play indicates inner tie rod wear
Outer Tie Rod End Replacement
This is the more common job and the easier of the two.
Tools Needed
- Tie rod end puller (also called a pickle fork or ball joint separator)
- Torque wrench
- 17–19mm wrench and socket (varies by vehicle)
- Tape measure or thread counter
- Alignment tape (optional but helpful)
Procedure
Step 1: Measure before you remove Count the number of exposed threads on the outer tie rod end before loosening it. This is your baseline to set the new one at approximately the same toe — it won't be perfect but it minimizes how far out the alignment will be.
Step 2: Loosen the jam nut The outer tie rod end is threaded onto the inner tie rod shaft and locked with a jam nut. Loosen the jam nut (don't remove it yet) with a wrench. This can be seized on high-mileage cars — penetrating oil the night before helps.
Step 3: Disconnect the stud from the knuckle Remove the cotter pin from the castle nut at the tie rod end stud. Remove the castle nut. Use a tie rod end puller or pickle fork to pop the stud out of the steering knuckle. A sharp strike on the knuckle boss while supporting the tie rod from below often releases the taper without a separator.
Step 4: Thread out the old tie rod end Unthread the old outer tie rod end from the inner shaft — count the threads again as it comes off for reference.
Step 5: Install the new tie rod end Thread on the new outer tie rod end to match your thread count measurement. Don't fully tighten the jam nut yet.
Step 6: Reconnect the stud Insert the stud into the steering knuckle, torque the castle nut to spec (commonly 35–50 ft-lbs), advance to the next cotter pin hole, and install a new cotter pin. Never back off the nut to align the cotter pin.
Step 7: Tighten the jam nut Once the alignment is checked and adjusted (see below), tighten the jam nut to spec — typically 55–65 ft-lbs.
Inner Tie Rod End Replacement
Inner tie rod ends thread into the steering rack and require different tools.
Tools: Inner tie rod end tool (a socket-style tool that fits over the inner rod housing) or a large adjustable wrench with a rag to protect the boots.
Additional steps:
- Remove the outer tie rod end first
- Peel back the steering rack boot to expose the inner tie rod
- Use the inner tie rod removal tool to unthread the inner rod from the rack
- Apply threadlocker (medium strength) to the new inner rod threads before installation
- Torque to spec (80–100 ft-lbs on most applications)
- Reinstall the boot, clip, and outer tie rod end
Alignment After Replacement
You must get an alignment after tie rod replacement. The thread count method preserves approximate toe, but alignment specs require a machine to verify. Driving on incorrect toe causes rapid tire wear.

Pro Tips
- Replace both sides simultaneously. If one outer tie rod is worn at a given mileage, the other is close. One-sided replacement leads to a second alignment within 6 months.
- Check the steering rack boots. If the rubber boots are torn when you're in there, replace them ($15–$25). A torn boot lets water and road grit into the rack, accelerating rack wear.
- Use anti-seize on the jam nut threads. Prevents the next removal from being a battle.
