That little horseshoe with an exclamation point lit up on your dashboard. Maybe it came on this morning in the cold. Maybe it's been on for a week. Maybe you inflated all your tires and it's still on. The TPMS (Tire Pressure Monitoring System) warning light is one of the most misunderstood dashboard lights there is — people either ignore it or assume it's a sensor problem when the tires actually just need air.

TPMS is a federal safety requirement for all vehicles sold in the US after 2008. The system monitors tire pressure and alerts you when a tire drops 25% or more below the vehicle's recommended pressure. It doesn't tell you which tire or exactly what the pressure is — just that at least one tire is significantly low.
There are two types of TPMS:
Direct TPMS: A pressure sensor inside each wheel transmits pressure data to the ECM. More accurate, gives you individual tire readings on many systems.
Indirect TPMS: Uses the ABS wheel speed sensors to detect a tire that's rolling differently (a low tire rotates slightly faster than a properly inflated one). No dedicated sensors — recalibration required after adjusting pressure.
Step 1: Check All Four Tires First
Before assuming it's a sensor problem, check actual tire pressure on all four tires. This sounds obvious but is frequently skipped.

Correct any tires that are low. A tire 7–8 PSI below spec (approximately 25% of a 32 PSI spec) is enough to trigger the TPMS light — and that much underinflation can happen gradually without looking visually flat.
What Triggers TPMS
- Significant pressure loss from a nail, slow leak, or puncture
- Seasonal temperature drop — tire pressure drops about 1 PSI per 10°F. A tire that's borderline in summer may drop enough in fall to trigger the light
- Leaking valve stem — the rubber valve stem deteriorates over time; replacing it ($2–3 each) is easy and often overlooked
- TPMS sensor battery failure — the sensors run on small batteries that last 7–10 years. When the battery dies, the sensor stops transmitting
- After a tire rotation or new tires — direct TPMS systems track sensors by wheel position; rotation without relearning may confuse the system
How to Reset the TPMS Light
Method 1: Inflate the Tires (Most Common)
Inflate all tires to the specified cold pressure. Drive the vehicle for 10–15 minutes at speeds above 25 mph. The system should detect that pressure is now correct and extinguish the light.
On some vehicles, the light may take a full drive cycle (a complete drive from cold start to warmed up) to reset. If it doesn't go off after 20 minutes of driving with correct pressure, use one of the methods below.
Method 2: TPMS Relearn Button (Indirect Systems)
Many vehicles with indirect TPMS have a manual reset button:
- Honda: Hold the TPMS reset button (often inside the glove box) for 3 seconds with the ignition on
- Toyota/Lexus: Menu → Vehicle Settings → TPMS → Calibrate
- Ford: Some models require holding the hazard flashers button for 2 seconds with the ignition in the "Run" position

Method 3: Drive and Auto-Reset
On most indirect systems, once pressure is correct, driving for 20–30 minutes at highway speeds allows the system to recalibrate and clear the light automatically.
Method 4: TPMS Sensor Relearn (After Rotation or New Tires)
Direct TPMS systems track sensors by position. After tire rotation, the system may still show the old positions. Many shops perform a TPMS relearn procedure with a special tool that activates each sensor in the new position. Some vehicles can self-relearn after driving a certain distance; others require the tool.
When the Light Stays On After Correct Pressure
If you've inflated all tires correctly, driven 20+ minutes, and the light is still on:
Check the spare tire. Some vehicles monitor the spare too. A low spare triggers the TPMS light even if all four rolling tires are correct.
Suspect a dead sensor battery. A sensor that's stopped transmitting (dead battery or failed unit) will trigger the light. This requires sensor replacement — typically $50–100 per sensor installed, including the programming step.
Check for a slow leak. A nail in the tread may hold pressure long enough to stay inflated but leak slowly overnight. Check tires again in the morning before driving.
The Blinking TPMS Light
A solid TPMS light means low pressure. A flashing or blinking TPMS light at startup (then going solid) indicates a system fault — usually a failed sensor rather than a low tire. This typically requires sensor replacement or diagnosis with a TPMS scan tool.
Seasonal Tip
Every fall when temperatures drop, expect TPMS lights to come on. Add 2–4 PSI to compensate for the pressure loss from temperature drop and reset the light. This is normal and doesn't indicate a problem with the sensors.
