How to Diagnose Suspension Problems in 10 Minutes
Your car is telling you something is wrong. Maybe it's a clunk over bumps. Maybe the steering wanders. Maybe it pulls to one side. Before you spend money at a shop, spend 10 minutes in the driveway. You can identify most suspension problems yourself with your hands, ears, and a floor jack.
This is the diagnostic routine. Run every check before calling any part worn or condemned.

Suspension problems fall into five categories:
- Damping: Shocks/struts worn — excessive bounce, dive, or squat
- Joints: Ball joints, tie rod ends — play and clunking
- Bushings: Control arm, sway bar — clunking and vague steering
- Bearings: Wheel bearings — grinding, humming, speed-dependent noise
- Springs: Broken springs — corner drops, harsh ride, visible damage
A single symptom can point to multiple causes. Run the full routine before reaching a conclusion.
Tools Required
- Floor jack
- Jack stands
- Flashlight or work light
- Pry bar (optional)
- A helper (useful for some tests)
The 10-Minute Suspension Diagnostic Routine
Minute 1–2: Walk-Around Visual
Walk around the vehicle with a flashlight. Look at each corner.
Check ride height: All four corners should be at equal height. A corner sitting lower than the others indicates a broken or sagged spring, or a shock that's completely collapsed.
Look at tires: Uneven wear patterns are diagnostic gold:
- Wear on both edges, good in the center: underinflation
- Wear in the center, good on edges: overinflation
- Wear on one edge: camber issue (bent suspension component or alignment out of spec)
- Cupping/scalloping: worn shock absorbers causing wheel hop
- Feathered wear: toe alignment out of spec
Look for leaks: Walk under the vehicle briefly. Fluid on shock bodies means a blown seal. Oil near the CV axle boots means a torn boot.
Minute 3–4: The Bounce Test
Push down firmly on each corner of the vehicle — hands on the fender lip — and release quickly. Watch what happens:
- Good: The suspension compresses, rebounds once, and settles immediately
- Bad: The vehicle bounces two or three times after release
Two or more bounces = worn shock or strut at that corner. Test all four corners.
Minute 5–6: Static Steering Wheel Check
Sit in the driver's seat with the vehicle on level ground. Without starting the engine, look at the steering wheel.
Is it centered? A steering wheel that's off-center while driving straight indicates an alignment issue — usually something moved: a bent tie rod, a replaced component that needs alignment, or a collision.
Now have a helper slowly turn the steering wheel lock-to-lock while you watch the wheels from outside. Both front wheels should track smoothly without delay or clunk.
Clunk when steering: Ball joint, tie rod end, or CV axle clicking through turns.
Minute 7–8: Under the Car (Jack Stand Check)
Raise the vehicle and support on jack stands. Get under with a flashlight.
Check bushings: Look at each control arm pivot point. Rubber should be present, not cracked or missing. Look for the arm moving in the bushing housing — any visible movement when you push on the arm indicates a worn bushing.
Check sway bar links: Grab the sway bar link and wiggle it — both the upper and lower ball joints should have zero play. Any looseness = worn link.
Check sway bar center bushings: The brackets holding the sway bar to the subframe. Look for the bar moving in the rubber bushing. Rattle when you push the bar side to side = worn bushings.
Check spring condition: Visible cracks, broken coils, or a spring that's separated from its perch. A broken spring is obvious — the coil will have a fresh break and the ride height at that corner will be noticeably lower.
Minute 9–10: Wheel Play Tests
With the vehicle on jack stands, do these tests at each wheel:
Wheel bearing test: Grab the tire at 12 o'clock and 6 o'clock. Try to rock it in and out (toward the car and away). Any play indicates a worn wheel bearing.
Tie rod end test: Grab the tire at 9 o'clock and 3 o'clock. Try to rock it left and right while the steering is locked. Any play indicates a worn tie rod end.
Ball joint test: Support the lower control arm with the floor jack. Grab the tire top and bottom and rock it. Any clunk or visible movement at the ball joint = worn ball joint. Let the suspension hang free — a loaded ball joint won't show play.
Noise Diagnostic Guide
Use this alongside the physical tests:

| Pull to one side | Braking or steady-state | Alignment, stuck caliper, or worn tire |
Interpreting Your Results
One Bounce Test Failure
Replace the shock or strut at that corner — and the opposite corner of the same axle. Shocks are always replaced in pairs.
Play at 12/6 (Wheel Bearing)
