Shocks and struts wear out gradually — so gradually that most drivers don't notice until the car's handling has gotten significantly worse. Unlike a blown tire or a seized brake, worn shocks don't announce themselves with a loud failure. They just quietly let the ride quality, handling, and safety of your vehicle degrade over 50,000–80,000 miles. Shocks (shock absorbers): Standalone damping units that control suspension movement. They don't support the vehicle's weight. Found on rear suspensions of many vehicles and some front suspensions. Can usually be replaced without disturbing the spring.
Struts: Structural components that serve as both the suspension damper and part of the chassis mounting point. They also support the coil spring. Replacing a strut is a more involved job than replacing a shock because the spring must be handled.
Most modern front-wheel-drive vehicles use struts up front and shocks in the rear.
7 Signs Your Shocks or Struts Are Worn
1. The Bounce Test Fails
The classic test: push down hard on each corner of the car and release. A car with good shocks should settle and stop bouncing within 1–2 cycles. If the car bounces 3 or more times, the shock is not controlling rebound effectively.
2. Cupped or Scalloped Tire Wear
Worn shocks allow the tire to bounce off the road surface repeatedly at speed. This creates a cupped or scalloped wear pattern — alternating high and low spots around the circumference of the tire. If you see this pattern, the shocks are failing.
3. Nose Dive Under Braking
A car with worn front struts will pitch its nose sharply downward during braking — an effect called nose dive. This increases stopping distance and can feel unnerving. If your car's nose drops significantly when you hit the brakes, the front struts need attention.
4. Body Roll in Corners
Excessive body lean when cornering — where the car tilts significantly toward the outside of a turn — indicates worn shocks or struts. Well-functioning dampers keep the body from rolling excessively.
5. Steering Wandering at Highway Speed
Worn struts affect camber and toe as they compress and extend. At highway speed, this can cause the steering to feel vague or the car to wander.
6. Visible Oil Leak on the Shock Body
Look at the outside of the shock body (the cylindrical tube). A wet, oily residue coating the outside indicates the internal seal has failed. This shock is done — it's no longer damping properly.
7. Clunking or Rattling Over Bumps
A worn strut bearing or damaged bump stop can cause clunking when you hit rough pavement. This is distinct from worn tie rod or ball joint clunks — it's usually louder and more abrupt.
The Bounce Test: Step by Step
- Park on level ground
- Go to each corner of the car and push down firmly on the bumper or body
- Release suddenly
- Count the bounces before the car settles
Result: 1 bounce and settles = good. 2–3 bounces and settles = borderline. More than 3 bounces or continuous oscillation = worn shock.
Do all four corners. Rear shocks failing before fronts is normal on many vehicles.
How Long Do Shocks and Struts Last?
Most OEM shocks and struts last 50,000–100,000 miles depending on road conditions, driving style, and vehicle weight. Off-road use, heavy loads, and poor roads all accelerate wear. Some vehicles (rough roads, regular towing) may need shocks at 50,000; others last 100,000+ on smooth highways.
